I've noticed that there is a LOT of general confusion when it comes to the console versions of the Mortal Kombat games. Usually there will be some discussion of arcade games, then someone shows up and swears you can do such-and-such or that what's-his-name is unlockable or that Rain is playable, and so forth. Frequently people are on completely different pages, discussing the version of the game that THEY remember and confusing everyone in the process.

So I figured I'd start this thread and let people contribute info on the console vs. arcade differences; hopefully this can limit some of the confusion for longtime fans.

I'll just start with a couple of obvious ones:

-Console versions of Ultimate MK3 added Noob Saibot and Rain, and removed Sheeva (except invisible Sheeva glitch). Rain was never playable in the arcade; Noob was playable in Wavenet UMK3 and only had his teleport special (not sure if CPU Noob had any moves in normal UMK3)

-Fergality is a console-only secret (Genesis MK2 I believe)

You get the idea...

i'll list some UMK3 Genesis and SNES differences from arcade versions:

1. Rain and Noob Saibot are playable and on the select screen. They appear to be just like their Trilogy counterparts.(No fatalities or friendships though).

2. Sheeva was removed from the game.(But her sound effects are still in the Sound Test Menu). GENESIS

3. Brutalities are in.

4. The graphics/gameplay/sound effects are pretty much ventage MK3 (not arcade version, home). Not a whole lot of detail has been added in this upgrade, with the exception of the UMK3 features/characters/backgrounds.

5. Animalities have been removed. Bun you can still perform Mercy in SNES version.

6. Shao Kahn's treasure chest has only 10 boxes instead of 12.

7. Most of Shao Kahn's voices are gone. You still get "Round 1" and stuff but no spoken character names. (Genesis MK3 to UMK3)

8. No UMK3 music, only MK3 music(in fact even though the Street stage isn't in the game it's music is in the Sound Test option in the CHEATS menu). GENESIS only!

9. Scorpion's hellraiser is different..it just takes the opponent back into the hell stage where they just catch on fire and explode.

10. Kitana's kiss of death only inflates heads..same effect as Kabal's air pump fatality.

11. Sonya's friendship is her MK3 one not her UMK3 one.

12. Air juggle combos are easier to do than in the Genesis MK3 version. In fact they fixed a lot of stuff that was wrong in MK3. (Genesis)

13. Stages: The Subway, The Bank, The Rooftop, Soul Chamber, Kombat Temple, The Pit 3,The Lost World, Jade's desert, Kahns Kave, Scorpion's Lair, River Kombat. Genesis Only!!

14. Uppercutting in the Subway and Soul Chamber does not take you to level above as there is none.

15. Everyone, except Human Smoke, has an intro bio. Genesis!

16. Everone has an ending bio. Genesis!

17. Stages: Blue Portal, Jade's Desert, Scorpion's Lair, Kahn's Kave, Waterfront, PIT III, The Roof. SNES!

18. Some audio/graphic data removed to save memory. (SNES)

19. Incomplete finishers for certain characters.

20. Rain has no ending. (SNES)

21. Shang cannot morph into Rain or Noob. (SNES)

22. Rain & Noob have only babalities and pits. (SNES)

23. Ermac,Mileena, and Classic Sub-Zero no longer need "Ultimate Kombat Kodes".

24. Older stages except PIT III and Roof removed. (SNES)

25. Several Kombat Kodes removed.

26. Toasty" trick on Scorpion's Lair removed.

27. "Winner Fight Smoke" code you still fight robot Smoke.

28. Ermac's head punch fatality has been changed. (SNES)

29. Human Smoke appears in endurance rounds. (SNES)

30. At various times when you're playing this version, you will get a kode on the screen with 6 symbols on it. You cannot control the outcome of this kode and you cannot use it on the SNES version. They are for Ultimate MK3 which is an arcade upgrade to the original MK3. Note that these kodes seem to appear at random, I don't think there is a definite way to get one of these kodes to appear, although several theories have been proposed and disproven. Also note that these are not the kodes that appear on Scott's Slots. If you are given a kode while playing the slots, you CAN use those on SNES MK3. The UMK3 kodes I speak of appear sometimes at the end of a game or when you beat the game.

Here are also some UMK3 Saturn differences that i know: 1. Ultimate Kombat Kodes are only 6 numbers 2. The 999-999 kombat kode shows "Saturn Revizion Number" 3. There are two specific kombat kodes for saturn only 200-002 & 300-003
