Dissapointment at Deadly Alliance
I played MK:DA for the first time last week. I know the game is relativly old, but I haven't had one of the systems it was on until I borrowed my friend's X-Box. Anyway, I was severly dissapointed at the approach the developers took to bring DA to life. It seems to me that they reinvented the wheel, which in most cases would make a sequel worth playing. But when I sit down to play a game of Mortal Kombat, I am expecting at least twenty characters, each with two fatalities and a host of other finishing moves. When I sat down to DA, not only was I dissapointed at the lack of fatalities but the quality of those fatalities. What kind of a finishing move is stretching someone's neck in a giraffe-like fasion? Maybe if their head had been snapped off, I would have found it more exciting. The only fatality that even gave me interest was Scorpion's.
What is up with the new characters? Now I didn't have any of the blackened charcters unlocked, but what happend to all of the ninjas? Are they out of the story line? I loved being able to go back and play the classic characters from MK1 and MK2 in UMK3.
And finally, the way secrets are aquired is rediculous. I really didn't want to sit through all of those training modes for each character. I know you can earn coins other ways but that is still a pain in the ass.
However, I liked the feature of bidding coins in matches against other players.
Anyway, that was my two cents. Sorry if I make any of you hardcore DA fans mad. =)

Well I personally liked MKDA a lot. The MK team only had about 1 and a half years to make the game and they were spending most of that time by creating the new fighting engine (which I thought was a big step in the right direction) from scratch. The reason for one fatality per character (excluding Blaze and Mokap) is because for each fatality that they make for this game, they would need to do some debugging and there was not enough time to have 2 fatalities or other finishers per character. As for the fatalities themselves, I didn't get to see all of them but they still looked pretty cool to me for the most part (except for Quan Chi's fatality). I really liked Cyrax's Claw Smasher/Mince Machine fatality and I hope he has that in MK6. And as for the amount of characters, I was also pleased with that. You did say you expected there to be at least 20 characters and there are 23 characters in the game (if you don't wanna count Moloch of course).
As for the ninjas, we'll probably be seeing Noob Saibot in MK6 (and I did hear he was in MK:TE for the GBA). Ermac was freed by Kenshi and Ermac taught telekinesis to Kenshi in return. I'm not sure about Rain and Smoke. We might see them in the future.
As for your so-called "secrets", they are more of unlockables. The real secret is yet to be found..(if there really is one)
So here is my 2 cents...

the MK team is trying to get away from the Ninjas. Which is why the 3 first ninjas (sub, scorp, and reptile) look totally different in MKDA. Reptile isn't a ninja at all... and Sub's alt. uniform is the ninja suite. The MK team didn't want any character to look like another.

There will always be people who rent a new MK game just to see the fatalities and play a little and then that's it and they complain. There's that kind of people who always see the negative of things and they always complain afterwards.

MK has matured a lot since the days of MKT. The MK team realized that it was a mistake to put in twenty characters based on the same 2 models. And they wanna focus on the gameplay instead of the glitter (secrets, fatalities). And I think this is a good thing. When they spend their time making too many fatalities, the fatalities themselves suffer. In MKT, so many fatalities stole animations from each other it was ridiculous. They wanted to make another game to make a few more bucks by adding quantity, but not quality. The result? Most of the fatalities used the same exploding animation, or splatter of blood, or charred skeleton, or what have you. Compare to MKDA's fatalities: none of them rely on repeated animations. Some may be remakes of old fatalities, but they don't steal from each other. And that's the result of a more focused MK team that takes its game seriously enough to put in the work it deserves. As far as lack of secrets, attribute that to a fairly tight schedule. MKDA was made for fans who like the game for the right reasons. To be honest I can't say I was always in that category, but MKDA has changed that.

Lack of secrets? WTF are you talking about?
676 things to unlock isn't enough for you? Bloody hell, you're hard to please...

The things in the Krypt weren't really "secrets" because they're all right there in front of you. All you have to do is play the damn game, rack up enough Koins, go to the Krypt and unlock shit. That's different from things like hidden option menus, vs. screen codes, etc. I liked the hidden menus from MK3, becasue unlike most of the stuff in the Krypt (excluding unlockable characters, costumes and arenas) that had an effect on the gameplay. Disabling combos, throws, blocking; 30 kredits; double energy or double damage; things like that. Some of the concept drawings and character jokes and things like that in the Krypt were cool, but it's completely different from actual "secrets."

Now that you mentioned it...I did expect some things to have stayed the same. I.E. :Ninjas are the bread and butter to this game. Without any of them, this game would have failed. Bring the ninjas back (all of them)!
