I was watching a pre E3 Gamespot.com developer interview with Ed Boon and he stated that he wanted to make another 2D series. I was really surprised that they were even considering it. If Midway Arcade Treasures 2 is succesfull, I have no doubt that we will see one soon!

Here is the link to the Developer interview with Boon. It is the 7min 11sec video.

That would be awesome, and I mean why not?
Capcom is releasing his SF2 HyperFighting and SF3 and Capcom Fighting Jam.
SNK is porting King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown 5 to the PS2.
And Sammy with his Guilty Gear XX and Isuka,
and those are all 2D Beat em ups.

2D Fighting isnt dead or outdated like some people say, its more like 2D an 3D fighting games can live with each other.

A new MK 2D with 3D Backgrounds and high-resolution captured fighters would be awesome.

Its probably a lie and probably will not happen. Get over it. MK will never get back to 2D. That coute is straight from Ed Boon. If you like 2D, then play the many versions of the old games. Peace out.

I don't think its an straight up lie personally, but I would not be suprised if it is. Ed Boon's lies have long been a major portion of the MK advertising campaign.

P.S. Thats not really a bad thing though. I think his lies and mistruths are hilarious :)

I don't know how many people agree with me on this, but I love MK Mythologies Sub Zero, the gameplay is classic, and it adds A LOT to the MK storyline. But I agree, 3-D Models don't wok for me, at least not in the MK Series. But just because MKM:SZ got 3-D backgrounds, that didn't ruin the atmosphere for me... But I think you'd agree that at that point in the MK series, Dan Forden ruined the music for MK forever.

2D Fighters, within 3D Backgrounds, but still 2D Environment would be Great!

Just like Capcom VS SNK 2.

Complete with "Impossible" Characters like Pinklet, Skarlet, Wind, etc.

Let's think about this....

1. 2d is making a huge come back with the new Street Fighter Collection, King of Fighters, Guilty Gear, and the Marvel Capcom VS series.

2. 2D is selling like crazy, and there are plans for alot more in the future.

3. Boon went to 3D when it became popular, so why in the world would anybody think he will not go back to 2D now that it's popular.

4. The fact that he crearly stated "I would like to have a 2D MK series and a 3D MK series running side by side" in an interview.

All this leads me to believe that we probably will see a 2D MK series in the future, if not near future. If Midway Arcade Treasures does well then it is a fukn garantee!!

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?
