I havn’t really played many MK games, but these look pretty convincing. (Or is it that i am a sad gullible loser)

That's a very hard question to answer. If you ask most people on this website they will tell you no, he doesn't exist. You're probably gonna start alot of contreversy with you're post, however if you see Ed Boon walking in the streets you should ask him one day. Since nobody has any definitive proof, it is with great regret that I say that no, he probably doesn't exist.

That picture editing looks like crap. Even I could do better than that. What an idiot.

Gosh! The solid truth is yes, Ermac is found in MK1!
Want his movelist?

Mortal Kombat
--------------------
Ermac

Spear (causes erros sometimes) B, B, LP
Teleport punch: D, B, HP
Slide Kick: B+LP+LK+BLK
Green Ice: err...I don't remember this one

Fatality (Head-rip): I don't remember this one, either.

Okay? Will this bar future curiousity of a non-existant character in MK?

No. He doesn't exist. But at least the rumors of him and all those other made up nonexistant characters really broke new ground for todays creators of fake images, a proud and noble pursuit.
I find it very hard to believe that nobody has been able to produce another Ermac appearence after all this time with the MK1 ROMs available on the net and so many tools to examine them.

I think it's just an old fake that was never owned-up to by the hoaxer. Imagine if EGM had not printed those fake Shen Long SF2 pics in an April issue and had never admitted they were fake! People would still be talking about the Shen Long hoax as real on SF boards today.

Very true. My biggest annoyance with people thinking something of the EGM image is still the fact that IT ISN'T A RED NINJA IN THE PICTURE, it's Scorpion in a bad dark picture, thats it. Then, add the text poorly with Paint and you have 13 years of contraversy. The dude that made that fake must be living it up if he even remembers he did it.

Personally I don't believe those pics. If the guy made a movie it wouldn't be questioned.

Now I dont like to hear "All the hackers examined the code and would have found it by now". You cannot view the sourcecode and find a glitch that happens on accident, only what is attended. I am a game designer so trust me, that comment has no relevance.

I know alot of people that swear the true Ermac glitch is when Shang Tsung changes into Scorpion and he comes up the wrong color. I don't know though.

I believe the glitch. Even Gamepro confirmed it, and so did the vgmuseum.

Here is the most UNDENIABLE proof the images are fake. In the text he said that "in the next round he was red" although in the images there is no round icon, showing that no one has won a round. (Meaning it's the first round). So he says that in the next round he turned red but the images show that its round 1 of the fight. Nice try, should have been more careful when editing them.

Also, when I open them in Kuickshow and magnify the image, you can tell alot more clearly where it was edited.

Every image of a red ninja in MK1 is inherently fake. That's a given.

But you would find text or graphics for things like the supposed "error macro" message that comes up or "ermac wins" like in the EGM pic.
Not to mention that the EGM guy claimed that Ermac actually jumped on-screen between matches like Reptile and said "I will fight you near the statues" and then when he showed up later said "I am Ermac. You will never defeat me." That text would be plain to see if you examined the ROM and it also undermines the common "glitch" explaination and portrays Ermac as a regular hidden character just like Reptile, which is probably why Ermac supporters usually ignore it when arguing. It was in the magazine, though. That's a fact. The claims about this text alone prove a hoax for me.

Also, the idea of a red ninja appearing because of a glitch doesn't really pan out. I mean if you think about it, if it didn't load one of the pallets for the ninjas to get him, it would have to load some other pallet. No other character in the game has a red pallet that could be loaded by accident to create a red ninja. The only thing red in the game is blood, but that only has a few colors. I don't know how big pallets are in MK1, but they are probably at least 64 colors. Mk2 I believe had 128 color pallets. They store them using RGB, I believe with a max of 255 for each color. So, for Ermac to appear in all red, assuming a 64 color pallet, would require 192 6 bit values in a row. If it tried to load a pallet and that pallet didn't exist, it would probably end up being resident garbage so he'd be a mix of completely random colors.

Does anybody here know how to sniff out a color pallet in a game rom? I've been trying to get it for SNES but that uses 5 bit values that I cannot seem to find effectively.
"He also claims he saw him twice, at two seperate trips to the arcade. Very lame."

Yeah, really. This one guys sees him twice on two seperate occasions and then no more sightings by anyone for over a decade? What are the odds?
