There is no Ermac in MK1.

Yeah, it's true. Ermac wasn't actually a character, it was just some weird glitch that occured in the arcade from time to time. Kids saw this red ninja and this word ERMAC and figured, hey, new secret character! I never saw it happen in person, but I've seen photos of it.

Ermac could happen. It was when the error macro ran. I forget the tech doc I read on it for this game but I think its when some error gets past all the rest of the error handling in the code. However, its such an amazingly rare occurrence that I doubt even the game programers could easily reproduce the circumstances.

I've seen a lot of pictures of the red ninja with ermac written on the screen but I honestly doubt all of their credibility. I believe it can happen though mainly because its not the only game where you can cause the error macro to happen and in many games it is referred to as ermac. It isn't too uncommon.
