I came up with some ideas for an update to the original MK.

Features
Add Reptile, Shang Tsung and Goro as playable characters, with perhaps Reptile in the center (where the dragon logo is) and the bosses to the right of Raiden and Scorpion, respectively. Alternatively, all three could add a layer on top of the first row to balance the character select menu out.

Enhanced sprites of characters, menus, and stages.

Ability to play against other players online, along with leaderboards to save this online data.

While it'd be possible to add those characters, it would not be possible to enhance the sprites at all without reshooting the actors. That was the plan with the HD Collection that was eventually scrapped. Backgrounds would be a lot easier to redo, but then the characters would look out of place.

Adding Fatalities would require some skilled sprite editing, or again, refilming. Otherwise it would turn out like lazy MK Trilogy crap.

Personally I'd be more interested in enhanced remakes or collections of the 3D era games, which would probably be much easier to put together.
