MK3 for PC is so old theres a chance you can't. I know a lot of the old games used Vesa graphics that newer computers just don't support any more.

Have you tried an emulator like VMware, Virtual PC or dosbox? They could theoretically emulate DOS and you could run it in that instead of trying to run it in Windows.

This doesn't really answer your question, but...I suggest getting it running using mame32k. I too bought mk3 and have since given up.

1. you can play other people over the network
2. umk3 is much more fun than mk3, although you can play mk3 if you wish
3. more faithful representation

that said, i just bought mk trilogy for the pc and that's supposed to work on xp. haven't received it yet, but you could try that route, if you could track down a copy.

MKT works on XP but you need to download some sort of compatibility patch.. but anyways you can just play the PSX version of MKT which is 1:1 to the PC version instead

the PSX version of MKT is probably the best choice outside of the arcade game itself, its got the same graphics as MKT for PC, just with more balanced gameplay.

I just acquired a copy of MK3 and it runs fantastically on my comp in Windows 2000. The sound is a little buggy but I can get the utilities for that, graphics wise it is perfect. Its a shame the same people didn't make UMK3 for the PC.

And it has ipx netplay built in...sigh.

We should try it out sometime once I get it running, it'd be interesting to see again.
