Hello, I was wondering if anyone here is good at hacking the "home versions of the MK Classics, after watching the video, "Mortal Kombat Hacked", showing the hackings of the Arcade versions of MK, it inpired me to the home versions, I'm started on MK2 for Sega 32X, because it the closest to the arcade than the SNES & Genesis version, I wanted to do what I saw in the video, it showed the bosses and hidden characters being finish off like the normal 12 playable characters in the game, and also being able to do any of the 3 stage fatalities on any stage on the game, those were the main things I wanted to in this 32X version of MK2, but I haven't had any real success, I was able to mess with the backgrounds and make take some of the characters frames out of place, nothing really great, but I know its possible to do these things I saw in the video on this because the arcade and home versions of the Classic MK games uses the same engine, so any advice would be great, and also if you want to see some pictures of what I did, I can post them up here.

Thanks
Hello, I made that Video and used a special MAME cheat.dat + some extra lines. (Pugsy cheat.dat)

I dont think it,s possible to do on home versions.
For the Stage Fatality like Pit 2, Acid Bath or Spike,s everywere you need a cheat command that change instantly the background to Pit2 or Acid Bath ect. and then use it on any other Background and the Game thinks you can Stage Fatality there.

To make Fatality,s on Secret Fighters you need a command line that instantly turns someone into another fighter.
So if your fighting Jade and are about to win change her via a cheat command to Kitana ect. and you can Finish Her because the Game thinks its Kitana ect.

The whole concept behind that "Hacking" is to let the Programm think something normal is going on.

Oh, and with "Instantly Change" I dont mean the Fighter/Background morphs ingame into another but just the Game thinks its another.

I dont know if there any command lines like this aviable for Action Replay,s Game Sharks ect.
But that the way you have to do it if you wanna try it.
Hope,s this help you a little bit.

A lot of the cheat codes for Mame seem similar to game genie or action replay or anything like that. You just get a memory location and change the value and you're good. You just have to find the place in memory where it saves things like what thec urrent P2 character is and change that. The problem is Mame has a really good way to scan the memory for certain values. it makes it comparitively very easy to hack. I don't know if any such scanning techniques are available for any of the home consoles, and especially 32X since it was so unpopular. You might end up doing some random prodding around the memory until you stumble on the places you want to tweak.

OK, thanks, but I have one more question KillerMiller & dreemernj, do you where I should start from because the rom its in .bin format and its has alot of files, is there any certain symbols I should be looking for inorder to find what I want.

There are two places you'll be wanting to hack.

If you hack the rom itself you will be changing the game. You can get a lot done with this, but with hacks like the ones used for Mame you are changing the status of the games memory, like the ram it is using to run. So in MK2 you pick your character, it saves what the current character is to its RAM, and the Mame hack changes that value to something else to get you to switch to a different character.

I'd say look for a memory or resource editor (I forget their correct name) something that will let you see what the memory looks like for a program running on your comp and start fiddling with that to see what values change when you change characters or something like that.

where do i get this mk hacks video?
Maybe you look on my sig where "MK Hacked" stands and simply use your mouse to move the white arrow on your screen over it, then right click and use "save target as".

So if you have an EPROM programmer, is it possible to rewrite some EPROMs for an MKII PCB? I have MKII 9 point something, it's the one with red shadow moves and multiple deadpool fatalities, etc... I'm assuming someone did something along these lines to make these modifications.

Also, is it possible to make changes to the color schemes, etc. Add Rain in there by swapping out someone's colors? Just a thought.

I'm not sure about editting the chips because I've only ever dealt with the software side of it. I imagine if you can figure out how the chips should be and you can create them you should be able to do it. The closest thing I've worked with is a Pic processor and Basic stamps but they wouldn't really apply to this.

Also, I have been trying to figure out color schemes in the game to see if it'd be possible to recolor characters (so far I have only attempted it in MK1) because that would be really hilarious looking.

I have managed to edit pictures, but for some reason when I do I end up only editting one layer of them, so for instance the character I did it with was Raiden in MK1. I can add lines and stuff to his frames that show up, but some of the details that I should draw threw actually appear over what I draw and show up as a color distortion, so I have a feeling the games store data in a way similar to SNES carts where there is a series of values that represent 16x16 sprites that are then stacked on top of each other and read through for each corresponding pixel to create a total image. If that's the case, or if anyone knows how it actually works, perhaps something can be done to figure out the color editting.

Some games I have editted for SNES I did so by searching for the RGB values of different colors that appear on a single sprite. I search for them until I find a series of what appear to be numbers matching up with a pallet and then alter it, but I haven't had any luck find info like this for the MKs for SNES or for the Arcade.
