How did Sub-Zero and Frost get seperated from the rest of the heroes in DA?

You know it's something I've been wondering. Why was Sub-Zero not present at the battle of the Deadly Alliance (of course given what happened, he should be glad he wasn't there) In Frost's ending, it has them returning to the portal so they can return to Earthrealm, so I doubt that part was canon as the Deadly Alliance had not been defeated yet. So what do you think happened?

They split up and made a vow to rendezvous at Shang Tsung's palace. Simple as. It just so happens Sub-Zero and Frost went together....just as it may be possible that Sonya and Jax went together.
