How do I fight smoke in MK2 on Midway arcade treasures for xbox?

Whenever I get Dan Forden to pop out after an uppercut on the portal, and try to hold down and press start, I just pause the game. The back button doesn't seem to be much help either. Can anyone let me know how they've been able to fight him? Thanks.

No one knows unfortunately. It is either a glaring mistake/screw up by the creators - or they are trying to make it like a big secret again like in the old school days of MK...

You can't. I emailed Midway with that question, and their reply was that since the buttons were set up the way they were, Smoke, and Random Select are no longer available on MKII on MAT2. Sorry man, but if you want to fight Smoke on MKII, you need MAME, Arcade, Computer, or one of the old home versions. sad
