I was sitting around, and I was looking at a few things in my home, one day, and I noticed something funny. I can guess how some of the names came to be, but, I wandered if they rearranged letters of some things, or saw signs for others. Below is what I mean.

1)Rain=rearrange the letters to spell the hair removal product "Nair" it is almost a backwards match. smile

2)Reiko=There is a Reico gun shop in my town. This may just be coinsidental, but what if? confused

3)Sub-Zero=Running Man movie villian was named Sub-Zero.

4)Mavado=Look up mavado in the dictionary. You'll find it, and it means mean in spanish.

These are some of the things that I though, what if that is realy how they came up with those names. I know that Rain is purple, and there was not only a movie, but alos a song by Prince called Purple Rain. Still though, what if? confused

You have as unhealthy an obsession with finding out what Rain is all about as I do with telling people they're wrong, and I think this is just another thread to talk about him and find out more opinions on the character.

I'll go ahead and bottom line it for you.

Rain is a character in MK designed to take up space. His appearance in the intro video was nothing more than a joke. The only viable explanation for his name and color is infact the Purple Rain/Prince joke. Rain can be Found in the Graveyard is another possible joke related to Prince's career being dead, and subsequently also providing an easy method of rumor creation in the process. "Oh damn, I fought Rain in the graveyard today, it was awesome, it even said it on the bottom of the screen." "No you didn't dummy." "Oh...yeah."

In essence, he is a joke character because everything about and/or involving him is based on jokes. If these jokes didn't exist, he would be a purple ninja with no depth at all, nothing even close to these couple paragraphs plus his storyline, another couple paragraphs. His storyline is just as lifeless as any other character who made an appearance in one official game. I wish there was more to him but there simply isn't. He appeared as a playable character in UMK3 for SNES and Genesis, MKT, and MKAdvanced.

As for the general purpose of this thread, I have also often wondered how they come up with names. Some of them are bad, others are interesting, and some have obvious origins.

Perhaps we should list a few more and see what we can come up with. Any starters?

Name meanings intrigue me and I wondered if they meant something. I think some were intended to suit the character and some were chosen just because they sounded cool.

Quan Chi- means bad lifeforece

Scorpion- in some mythology (I'm not sure which, might have been Egypt for Greece) the scorpion was a creature used for revenge or protection

Hanzo Hasashi- this I'm not so sure about, but I think Hanzo means something similar to "rebel" and Hasashi means something similar to "blade death"

Sareena- means serenity

Reiko- this name's meaning changes based on it's spelling. The closest I found to "Reiko" means watchful guard

Sub-Zero- obviously

Kitana- a play on the word katana most likely

Mileena- means grace or honey. Does this suit Mileena, I don't know.

Yes, Sheeva is a play on Shiva, the Indian multi-armed goddess of destruction, I believe.

Raiden and Fujin: RL Japanese gods of Thunder and Wind, respectively.

Goro: Fifth son in Japanese, I believe.
