Do you consider pacman a fighting game? Cuz if you do then Pacman is top of the list.

The answer to your question is very simple.....Mortal Kombat can't really be compared to other fighting games that much, because it's special and unique. Tekken is cool, but I didn't like Tekken 4 too much and the fighting system to the Tekken series makes the characters feel sluggish and robotic, despite the fact that some characters are fast. Street Fighter is dead, and those Capcom vs. games are just trying to bring back the Street Fighter engine. It's nothing but button mashing. Never played any Virtua Fighter game. Dead or Alive may have great graphics and maybe good gameplay, but the characters and storyline and the whole feel of DOA seems bland and ordinary. I do like it for it's speed though. Soul Calibur is pretty good to me, but I'm still confused as to why they have to put characters such as Link, Spawn, and Heihachi in Soul Calibur 2. (though I do know that Yoshimitsu was in both Soul Calibur and the Tekken games) I really can't say that much more about Soul Calibur since I'm not too familiar with it...Tao Feng looks good, but it has a long way to go to catch up to Mortal Kombat..though I do like the fact that Tao Feng is based on Chinese mythology, the way the first 2 MK's were like. Mortal Kombat had it's ups and plenty of downs, but MK:DA brought it back up and now it's going in the right direction and hopefully MK6 will be better than MKDA and that the future MK games will go back to it's roots....

mortal kombat was a pioneer in a sense how many figthing games used digitized characters and actors for the characters before mk, how many had blood and fatalities? not to many i think time killers was the only one that came out around the same time as the first that had blood and guts but it didnt have actors for the characters, so mk cant really be compared to other games

If yer gonna compare fighting games, than Tekken and Street Fighter are much better. No I don't need to be checked, cos I played all 3 games before I made my judgement BlackIce

Mortal Kombat has an original story.
Was the firt to use digitazed characters.
First with memorable brutal violence.

Mortal Kombat just has something other games dont. His story is very original, and its success is unique! I think Tekken and VF and SF arent good, they arent original, they are fun and all, but its easy to get bored. The graphics arent as good as Mk. they look squarish. (square tipe).

MK2 still remains to be my fave fighting game of all time. That really was the game that changed the future of fighting games as we know it.
MK3 was alright, but I think MK4 was a total flop. Did nothing much at all.

SF series have been a good game. However back in the days, even with 638 different SF2's available none of them compared to MK.

SF Alpha and III are good fighting games, but in a different genre than MK. And still don't compare in gameplay, nor storyline.

Tekken 2 was a great game, and has improved even more so. Haven't played T4 so cannot comment on that one.

VF games are never in the running.

DOA games are good graphics, storyline is shit. Quite an easy game to complete as well. Could be improved alot.

Killer Instinct is/was a super great fighting game. The combo system has not even been touched on compared to this awesome game. The original KI was much better than the sequel however. If there is going to be a KI3 it will be up there with the greats as well I would think.

Haven't had great gameplay from soul calibre so cannot comment. There are probably others, but i haven't played so they don't count to me.

So in order from best to worst in my opinion.

MK - KI/Tekken pretty equal - SF - DOA - VF

The whole mortal kombat series has kept me captivated, except ofcourse the subzero single player and that one i heard with Jax? They kinda came and went without me noticing!
Anyway, the series is great and as far as other Beat 'em ups go i'd say the only ones that have ever stuck out in my mind were Tekken 3, tekken 4 is good but has less content and seems less fullfilled, and ofcourse the new xmen beat emups are quite amusing, most recently xmen-Next dimension, it's a good game with characters who clearly have in depth stories and it's content is ridiculously huge!

I think though mortal kombat deadly alliance is the best while xmean ND comes second, bt that's jsut me!

The Tekken series is the most boring fighting-games ever, Streetfighter is for kids, Dead or Alive is fun for 10 minutes, Soulblade and soulcalibur is quite good. But Mortal Kombat is way better, in all ways. Fighting without blood ain't fighting, and that is why Mortal Kombat is the best of fighting games! In my opinion.

I played all those games, when they first came out, from MK to Virtual Fighter and Street Fighter.

But how come nobody mentioned Killer Insticnt?

I would call this game the best, to me it was a mix with the Japanese type of play, lets say like Sreet Fighter but more like Mortal Kombat at the same time.

What I mean is that the Capcom games were a lot more lets say action packed, and MK was more brutal and not cartoonsih, KI had both, not cartonsih, action packed, and brutal.

I'm sorry to disappoint, but Street Fighter is definitely not dead and most definitely not a button mashing game.
I eat 'mashers' for lunch when they play against me in the SF Games, it just doesn't hold up to technique and raw skill.

As for how MK compares, it is unique in that it centers around a gameplay system where juggles are highly encouraged and have been since the start.

sf is not dead, im definately going to have to disagree with you. i personally believe the original soul calibur to be the best fighter, but back to street fighter. head over to shoryuken.com and see for yourself. take a look @ the thousands and thousands of ppl in america alone on capcom vs snk on xbox live and u will c it is still popular. there a still plenty of sf tournaments and nationals. its not dead. and third strike has some of the most defined gameplay. i like mortal kombat, but street fighter will always be a more fun for me.
