How do you train/practice in MKDA for competitions against friends?

I have no competition, but I still practice.

I start out by practicing my custom combos.
Then I practice my mix-ups.
Then I move on to juggle combos.
Then I try to find the most effective way to keep an opponent away to stall time for Power-Ups/Taunts etc.
After all that is done, I go through the character movelist, performing each move about 3-6 times to test it's effectiveness in terms of reach, power, push, speed, opponent's reaction, evasive properties, etc.
Then I practice avoidance by perfecting timed sidestepping, crouches and reversals.
After all is done, I play arcade mode at max difficulty to observe how the CPU acts under different circumstances. I try charging at the CPU with nothing but offensive intentions, I try defending for periods of time, I try jumpkicking, crouch attacks, using power-ups/taunts at specific times, and I practice utilizing escape moves.

this is about the best you can do without real humans to play against...i consider myself to be a very good player with about 5 of the characters in MKDA (scorpy, sonya, kunglao, nitara, drahmin) as of this writing... and i only do about 70% of what you're doing when i don't have human comp around.

(i have found that it's easier to land some combo types against humans though.)

but playing the comp. ALOT can start limiting your creativity and this is what it takes to beat good human comp...cause you get a 'feel' for how the comp will react given that you do x, then it does y, or you sidestep x, then you use z..etc. and the comp. programming is only going to be so creative, so that you get into patterns of reation, that may or may not work on humans!!

play humans as much as possible and view your time against the comp. as practice for your combos, defense, sidestepping and timing...

do you find enjoyment out of going through this, it sounds very monotonous. anyway still waiting on the game, but when i train in a fighting game i usually just goto practice and try out big damage combos untill i know them like the back of my hand, then i goto arcade, set it on the hardest diff and poke, mix up and set the cpu up for big combos. but ill have to c when this game comes out.

devilgene, what u said about playing the cpu all the time is true, it does limit your creativity, and its sorta sad if u can't get good comp. i used to have doa3 and never once got to play comp, and my gameplay was very limited. and i know i won't get any comp with mk:da and its not even out here yet, sorta sad.

heres what i do,

pack up my graffix,
get reeeeeeeeely stoned,
go to practice mode for like 2 hrs and make the cpu my flesh puppet.

this is a good way to familiarize yourself subliminaly with all the different moves of your stances.

A big part for me in any Fighter is learning the various ranges of the regular hand to hand moves, the speed they come out at, and the overall damage and comboability of them.
Then, how they work in regards to countering other moves and how they might buffer into and 2 in 1 into specials and other regular moves.
