how many mk fans DON'T play the 3d game(s) and just stick to the 2d classics?

i've seen a few around here and am just wondering. also, which of the games do you play?

if mkd is as broken as mkda, i'm going to quit the 3d games completely and stick with the 2d. not saying the 2d games aren't broken. but they went to 3d to fix problems like that. if they can't do that, there's no point for me personally to play them. i need to try to get myself back game shape with the classics and play with the big boys like mk2kungbroken. the new interview with boon at gamespot, he also says he'd love to start making a 2d line of mk games again. which would permanantly make me quit playing 3d all together.

i haven't played any of the classics in years. MATII can't come soon enough.

If they went back to the UMK3 engine or something simliar, maybe added some things to it, I think a lot of us would die and go to MK heaven. Since the release of DA I thought it would have been a really neat idea to use the 3D renders and make them into 2D characters, in the UMK3 style engine, and make a bonus game like that. I have tried the 3D games, not just MK, but all kinds of games, and I simply don't like them for the most part. But for the love of God release them in the arcades, Tekken 5 is coming out soon, and it's STILL going to be arcade first.

i'm just afraid if they decided to start making another line of 2d games, they'd be on the portable systems only (that might have something to do with boon mentioning a 2d line of games on the topic of the portable systems). but i guess that wouldn't be too bad. i hear both the DS and PSP will be able to plug into tv. i just like playing on a tv or monitor. yeah i'd like arcade releases, but midway is never going back.

i hear what you mean about 3d models of characters in a 2d plane. they can design a lot better 2d backrounds as well with this new technology. guilty gear has been showing that. i liked the look of mk4/mkg character models at the time. i thought they were really clean. but the 3d backrounds made the game look ugly. if the mk4 character models were on a 2d plane with umk3's system, i'd die.

i bought MKDA when it first came out and i got a good month or so off of it, but now i only play the classics. I too agree on your idea of using 3d renders as 2d characters.

They might as well just render everyone from every game in every costume and do all this for some kind of bonus game, it'd rule. There are tons of console games at tournys now too, it could breathe some life into them. I was hoping with the release of MAT2 they might rerelease MK1 and MK2 for GBA or something, and stick in a lot of the stuff they had to leave out of the SNES versions. I think not releasing an arcade version of MKDA was a mistake, a fresh 3D game to compete with Tekken 4 and Soul Calibur 2 in the tourny scene. Really all I want is playablity, without brokenness, and DA gave us the complete opposite. No wake up moves, broken, unblockable by reaction chain combos, stupid infinites and cheese tactics found within a week of the game's release. I was taught on the night of the first official MKDA tournament at NEC3 how to cheese with Sonya. I had 2 hours of game time experience going into a tournament lol. It was a joke. If the MAT2 sales are good, maybe they'll take something like this seriously.

would you prefer a whole new series if they went 2d or just have them stick to what's going on? meaning would you prefer like a prequel series or just stick to mk6, mk7, etc? only they make 2d versions of those games.

i wouldn't care either way. i just miss 2d. i grew up on it. i'll be all over MATII and SF:AC this fall. basically i'm retiring from 3d this fall lol. i don't even know if i care about mkd anymore.

I agree completely with everyone on this topic. The only 3D versions of MK I still play, and enjoy were MK4, and MK Gold. They never got boring. There was always something new to do. When MKDA came out, and they changed the buttons from the classic HP, LP, HK, LK, BLK, RN, I played it like once to beat the game to get the endings. I then, never touched it since, and it is now collecting dust on my shelf. I'd love to see more 2D based, or even a 3D based MK as long as they bring back the old style controls. HP, LP, HK, LK, BLK, and RN. It was fun to try to figure out hidden moves, and finishers. In MKDA, they wasted too much time on the new styles, and a lot of memory was wasted in the Krypt, and Konquest modes. If they stuck with the old style, they wouldn't need a new mode to teach us how to play. Anyway, that's just my opinion. Bring back the old controls please. smile

I don't care when the games take place as long as they had the tightness of the UMK3 design. Perhaps the speed of MKT with the frame rate of 3D generated characters.

But I'd still like it very much if they brought back capturing actors and stuff, instead of 3-D rendering, 3-D rendering can be done for the backgrounds or something, but then again, we're talking about this like it's actually gonna happen.

i like mk better in 2d too.3d looks to cartoonish i like the old games better boon shouldnt of gone 3d like every other game mk was special in 2d when it came out in 3d it lost its cool factor. Just think what it could of been if it stayed in 2d.
I don't like the MK series in 3D because to me it doesn't feel right .I'm like frustrated trying to play a 3D fighter with a 2D control system .My perfect 3D fighter would have a wrestling game engine so you could move around freely ,instead of that sidestepping crap ,plus it's more realistic .Everyone is so quick to jump on the 3D bandwagon .Although I do enjoy other 3D fighters .

I dont play the 3D MKs. I was totally hyped when MK4 came out and was let down. MKDA I found unimpressive as well. I don't have very high hopes for MKD.

I would like more 2D MKs and better 3D MKs. I want them both, because I still play the classics, and because I love 3D fighters. For a long time I played SOul Blade almost as much as I play UMK3/MKT. I love Soul Caliber still, and I found SC2 entertaining if not that impressive of a leap from SC1. I also happen to think that VF4evo is the greatest 3D fighting game ever created, and I would love to play that more as well.

So, I want 3D fighting games, I really like them. But, 3D MK so far has sucked and I only want that if it will be better. More 2D MK fighters is definately welcomed by me, if they were ever to consider it, mainly because I think UMK3/MKT was the best 2D fighting system and deserves to be expanded and tightened.

I was talking with the Prophet from shoryuken.com tonight while I was at work about this, we came up with something like a SF3 of MKs, super high frame rate either using rendered realistic looking character, or go back to the good old motion capture, significantly tweaked fighting system, but still similar to the old school, just do balancing here and there, maybe refurbish some concepts, try and keep it to characters with real personality, and maybe keep the 4 attacks, but give the characters different damage scaling and more decisive reach, speed, power, and heights weights and what not, there isn't really a way to exaggerate realistic characters so I think this would be the best way. We were also thinking of giving Forward+Attacks for things like a HK, and a LK, and just hitting the buttons regular would be the close range attacks that would start auto combos, this way the auto combo system wouldn't be a dial a combo, it could be more free like a Capcom game. Some kind of countering ability as well to be able to get out of things like run jabs, not a super meter, but something similar to the guard meter in SFA3.

It's nice to be able to spend time at work coming up with MK game concepts.

Well, in a nutshell, I guess that's why this forum exists, for the true MK fans who haven't forgotten the glory of the classic Mortal Kombat fighting, those who still praise the wonderful world of 2-d Rendered actors, those who remember what Mortal Kombat is truly about... (tear)
And now, Midway had seen our appreciation for the classics and is giving us the wonderful, heavenly honour and pleasure to enjoy all the classic Arcade MKs in the confort of our own home... With the arcade in our house and the quarters in our pockets... Amen...

I loved the 2d games and grew up playing them...

but sadly, if MK is to make a decent profit it needs to
keep up with the times. Too many people would ignore
the game if it wasn't flashy and 3d.

That said, imagine how kool it would look on Xbox or
Ps2... sharper graphics and more animation frames
for a start. They could probably put tons of fighters in
the game because the jump back to 2d would free up
loadsa memory...

I still enjoy MK:DA. I love getting stuff from the krypt,
but I'm slightly getting bored having to keep playing through over and over trying to get more koins!!!! furious
