How Scorpion went downhill... my anaylsis
There's been rants about this, from me, XiahouDun84, Sub-Zero7th and a few others before about how Scorpion's story sucks and how the MK Team is ruining their flagship character. Now you have to wonder why Midway would proceed to ruin their (arguably) most popular MK character. What I think is the cause of this tragedy: Scorpion's popularity.

Don't get me wrong, Scorpion's popularity pretty much guarentees him a spot in every MK game to come. But yet, the MK Team has made it clear time and time again that they don't clear if they have to mess up his story in order to put him into the game. *coughShaolinMonkscough* Yet, there's this one other thing that sorta ticks me off when I think about. How well they've treated Sub-Zero's story.

Once again, don't me wrong, Sub-Zero's story is great as he has arguably gotten more development than any other character. But here's the thing: Sub-Zero's popularity is no doubt just as high as Scorpion's. (The two are neck and neck) So while Sub-Zero's popularity also guarentees him a spot in every MK game to come, the MK Team has made sure to give him a lot of build up and development. People say that this is because Sub-Zero is an icon, thus the reason why Sub-Zero gets so much build up. But yet, Scorpion has been more pushed towards "the icon" status. He's often the character shown the most in magazines, trailers and the like.

Now I'm not going to bother ranting about "removing the vow from Scorpion's storyline has ruined it" since there's been countless rants about it. But I find it unfair that Sub-Zero gets a lot of build up and development while Scorpion's is taken away by idiotic retconning...

Contrary to those who think Scorpion's story started to suck in Deception, I think it was in Deadly Alliance, that Scorpion's story seriously started to suck. Since it practically eliminates the vow to protect the younger Sub-Zero from his storyline and makes him out to be nothing more than a revenge-crazed specter. (I don't know why they spell it as "spectre")

Now there's also this one little thing about how people go on about how Scorpion can kick everyone in the MK series' ass and then kick it again. But yet does he really? I'll get to that in a minute. In the promotional videos for MK:SM about all the characters, there was various input about their story and roles and personalities and whatsoever, but in Scorpion's case all you hear is "Scorpion's the coolest" or "Scorpion's my favorite. The spear is awesome." or "You can't do an MK game without him."

That right there, says that they are completely ignornant about whether or not his story is good or bad. They don't care, they just want to make sure he's in the game. Now about Scorpion being able to kick everyone's ass.... Let's tally up his known fights.

Wins:
Older Sub-Zero in MK1
Younger Sub-Zero in MK4
(and in the vow storyline, it's implied that Scorpion fought Sub-Zero in MK2, but spared his life. And I don't really count Scorpion's thrasing of Quan Chi inbetween MK4 and MK:DA as battles.)

Losses:
Older Sub-Zero in MKM:SZ (twice)
(by going by the non-vow, he might've fought with Sub-Zero in both MK2 and MK3 and lost, but this is unconfirmed)
Moloch and Drahmin in MK:DA (Twice)
Quan Chi in MK:DA
And... while these are canonically questionable:
Shujinko in MK:D's Konquest.
Liu Kang and Kung Lao in MK:SM.

Yet there's also the spotlight shown on him in MK:SM's intro movie, while every other fight, it was shown to be more even out between the fighters (Sonya and Kano got to trade a fair amount of blows with each other.) Every time we see Scorpion and Sub-Zero going at it, Sub-Zero throws Scorpion around like a ragdoll.

Now let's look at Sub-Zero's wins and losses.

Wins:
Cyrax in MK3.
(apparently Scorpion in MK2 and/or MK3)
Sektor before MK:DA.
Hotaru in MK:D.

Losses:
....Scorpion in MK4.

Look at that, just LOOK at that. Sub-Zero often gets to win his fights, to show that he can kick ass while Scorpion.... is a chump.

It's sad really, Scorpion's being potrayed as a random, mindless, incompetent moron who randomly goes after anyone who pisses him off and gets his ass kicked everytime. See MK:SM for full details.

Now instead of being neutral and the anti-hero who would assit the heroes if he had to. I'm scared that they are pushing Scorpion towards the evil side as MK:SM might imply. (Is he on Shang Tsung's side? They never really said. But they've implied it and have implied the opposite, strangely) I liked how he's from Hell, yes, but he's not evil. That's a pretty good concept right there.

But... it seems as though the MK Team is still completely ignorant of what they're doing to Scorpion, hence his place in the MK:A trailer, fighting alongside QUAN CHI! (No, before anyone else says so, Sub-Zero is not Scorpion's #1 enemy, Quan Chi is, believe me I KNOW some people have thought that)

Now, Shaun Himmerick cleared up that Scorpion would kill the older Sub-Zero and told us to "calm down" (or just me, heh) But yet said nothing about how Scorpion got thrown around or why he for some reason jumped through the portal with the villians, when you'd think he's go after Sub-Zero OR why he attacked Kung Lao out of nowhere.

Then on Fight Night, they say the reason why we didn't see Scorpion kill Sub-Zero is "because they want to do the story justice" Am I the only one who cried bullshit at that? They've made it clear, that they have NO intention of doing the story justice. They just want to make sure Scorpion's in every game to come, regardless of what they have to do his story. It's sad really, makes really wonder if Scorpion is indeed Ed Boon's favorite character or John Vogel's (who was the one who said Scorpion was the coolest MK character)

To sum it all up: Scorpion's story sucks now. End of story.

And lastly, if someone from the MK Team is reading this, please take this into consideration (though you probably won't) and finally give Scorpion a good story, but this is just a Scorpion fan begging and pleading. It seems that Scorpion's story is nearing the point of no redemption...

lol wow...uh, that's quite deep, PNF. But yes, you are very right about what you said. There is still a bit of potential left in Scorpion's story, but what are the chances that they'll really flesh out that potential?

Btw, I disagree with you about the Sub-Zero/Quan Chi stuff. I think either Sektor or Noob Saibot is his greatest enemy.
No... I said that Quan Chi is SCORPION's #1 enemy. You either misread that or I wrote it wrong... but yeah, he's still got potential, but the MK:A teaser trailer doesn't give me much hope.

that was a good anaylsis man, should be racked up with dps for that.

i totally agree how scorpion is going downhill. granted, i never was the biggest fan of him from the start, but he was a good, character. he had the costume, the story, the moves. but the same rehased story of vengence of his family has nailed him in a coffin. personally, vogel has not done a good job on most of the stories, tobias seemed to have a better handle on it.

the thing that angers me the most about scorpion is why most people like him. cause he has the spear and yells come here. honestly, most people who don't know the game, think hes the best. think of the hundreds of short lived noob members here who say hes the best for those reasons.

to make him better, i believe he needs a new story, and needs to be more 3-dimensional. he just has gotten so dull.

This analysis is awesome. This is worth DPs.
I agree that Scorpion's storyline went incredibly downhill. The storyline was ridicilous- they turned him into a revenge-crazed spectre.

Nice thread, but I see his losses a bit differently.

- Death from the elder Sub-Zero: A completely fair loss, his arrogance caused him to just simply get beat.
- Elder Sub-Zero defeat in the netherrealm: I’m assuming also very fair, as in no interference.

I wouldn’t count MK2 or MK3 as losses to the younger Sub-Zero.

- MK2: It’s possible, since he could only be free for so long that he didn’t have enough time.
- MK3: Scorpion could only stay out of the netherrealm as long as Shao Kahn was wrecking havic. In payment to Shao Kahn, he was probably slaying many earthrealm warriors in this time rather than deal with Sub-Zero. But it is possible at the end of MK3, he fought his current master Shao Kahn and lost before Liu Kang killed Shao Kahn.

MK:SM obviously wasn’t canon, the bosses were killed just for the fun of it. Hints why they are all still there.

- Defeated by Quan Chi in the acid pit: I view this as ridiculously cheap, a pop kick... a friggen pop kick into the acid. It reminds me very much of the death-traps in MKD, blatantly cheap.

- Tossed into the soulnado by Moloch and Drahmin: One simple throw by onis that weigh a lot more than him unintentionally becomes the best thing that happens to him after his death. This was needed for the Elder Gods transformation.

What were you counting as the other Drahmin/Moloch loss? Not killing them in the netherrealm?

- Shujinko: If he losses, at least be fair like this one. Shujinko actually squared off with Scorpion before they fought. It makes sense that Scorpion lost, Shujinko had about 20 other characters powers including Scorpion’s when he was strengthened in the netherrealm.

- I’m betting he didn’t catch Onaga in time before Armageddon started.

In Armageddon: I actually see him feuding with Noob Saibot primarily. It only makes sense Noob Saibot is threatening to takeover the netherrealm and Scorpion becoming the Elder Gods enforcer to make sure shit like that doesn’t happen. It’s like the MK team has been building this up purposely for ages. Scorpion created this demon and now he’ll attempt to destroy it. After he does his job, he’ll probably finish the Quan Chi personal matters.

Many may disagree, but I really don’t see why Sub-Zero would even get involved with Noob Saibot. Once Sub-Zero finds out who he is, there is going to be some restraint. Plus, Sub-Zero has more important matters to deal with like Hotaru, Sektor and Onaga.
