I know this was some sort of rumor back a few months ago, but its not really that bad of an idea. I mean think about it, the DS can't handle the graphics for games like Deadly Alliance and Deception, but all of the classics wouldn't be a problem for the DS. Sure you could release MK 1, 2, 3, or UMK3 and make them awesome, but MK Gold would be a better option and be able to deliver a more wide variety of use on the touch screen, because of the 3-d'ness of it.

Another reason, is Gold's popularity. While it was one of the best and most popular Dreamcast games, we all know the Dreamcast died pretty quick. I think this would be a great opportunity for gamers who never got to experiance MK Gold to get to play the game.

Third reason, it was better than MK4. Sure they could release 4 for the DS, but why waste your time. It would be like releasing MK3 instead of UMK3. Just wouldn't make much since.

Last, the DS needs a good MK game. Midway probably dosen't have any current plans for a DS release of any MK as of right now, and I highly doubt they will release anything "new" for the DS unless it is some kind of side-story, non-canon ripoff, and I am personally tired of entire games being non-canon in MK. So, why not release a classic, with its own classic mode AND DS mode, like Capcom did for Resident Evil.

DS can't handle MK Gold either .That game is history, forget about it ,wasn't even a smash hit so people would want it back. Midway said no DS and that's the way it is,too bad they didn't at least do MAT 3 on DS too .DS deserves a good 2D MK ,after the total failure MK Advance on GBA was.

I think the best DS would see if anything would be a port of MKT from N64. MK3/UMK3 would need to be ported off of the PSX/PC/Saturn versions just because the DS doesn't have any hardware scaling, so they'd need to use scaled graphics just like the home versions did.

Unlike others though, I think MK4/MKG could work on the DS. I don't think they'll ever do it, but if the N64 can handle MK4, the DS should be able to handle it. Heck, I always thought the GBA could have done MK4 (Just take a look at what Pocketeers did with NFS:PU and NFS:Underground 1 for GBA-- although that company has some talented programmers; EA hired another company for their more recent games and they got horrible reviews compared to Pocketeers' games).

The DS could handle Gold. The graphics are just as good, if not better than N64's graphics.

Negative....I love the DS, although I lost mine, but its obviouse that the N64 had better graphics, they just didn't know how to use them all that well at the time. Just take a look up-close at some DS games. Splinter Cell was terrible, too slow and blocky looking. Mario 64 was/is good, but when you look closely at any of the characters, they are soooo pixelated, or blocky. I think DS does a fantastic job as a handheld system, but their strongest points graphic wise come from viewing the game at a distance. Up-close, its obviouse that the DS isn't exactly at the same level as N64.

It wasn't a rumour... I'm surprised at how few people realised that the rumour started on April 1st...

on the ds graphics front have any of you seen mario kart, metroid, top spin 2 the new zelda etc, they all look fantastic. The DS can put out some really impressive visuals but the developers have to be bothered to put in that extra effort. The DS could easily handle a 3d mortal kombat, it wouldnt look as great as deception, on the consoles but unchained certainly doesnt either.

id personally like MK2 created for the DS. but with some fancy extras... play as kahn, kintaro, free kano/sonya, etc.

and with the touch screen, the fatality system could be re-worked. would make things a bit interesting.
