It should not have been called/promoted as Trilogy
Hi there. First time poster. Plan on sticking 'round. But have to get this off my chest before I do (seriously, this topic's hanging off like a pair of double d's).
The most insulting thing about MORTAL KOMBAT TRILOGY (and let's face it, tearing it several new asses is part of the fun) is the title and premise. The title implies a collection of content from all three games. Pre-release press focused on this as well. Yet what we got was basically ULTIMATE MORTAL KOMBAT 3.2.
The invincible selectable bosses were great, sure. But trilogy? Not even close. Missing:
Several backgrounds from previous games. The temple from part one and arena stand out, as well as the spike ceiling stage and Kahn arena from part two. Don't kick my ass if some of these are actually there. I'm too busy getting locked into a loop of stages every time I punch someone to an upper level anyway (genius coding there).
And plenty of character variants from the earlier games. Why they choose to include an earlier Jax is beyond me, when the real gold would have been Classic Tsung - just imagine, jumping in levitations and maneuvering the old goat into a stream of unearthy fireballs. To me the streamlined "Crow" version of part 3 didn't cut it. Hell, I woulda settled for part two's version. Classic Liu Kang is missed, too, for a nostalgist like me.
Apols if this post ranted on too long - you could say I've had these feelings for years and am just glad I've found somewhere I can let it out at. Don't get me wrong, TRILOGY is fun, and playable, but the title and concept represents a veritable bucketload of missed opportunities and marketing... deception.

I agree with you there, Immortus.
I do feel like the game was struggling to run a bit, as
there was so much stuff crammed in, and I guess we
don't get all the versions of each character simply
because older versions dont have the correct
animations to fit in with the new gameplay style.
MAT2 should sort this out, hopefully!
It would be nice to see an 'Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy'. The Ps2, and Xbox could handle it better.
It would be the game MKT SHOULD have been.
Midway, let's see this game!!!

A new MKT would be awesome. Imagine if they made it similar to Mavel vs Capcom 2, where they made new 2-D versions of characters who had previously only been in 3D games. You'd have the whole MKT crew, but they could throw in people like Tanya and Frost, and maybe have alternate costumes reflecting the changes in Ermac, Mileena, etc. Obviously they would call it something different than "Moral Kombat TRILOGY" but it would be the same basic theory behind it. Holy crap would that rock. Fun to dream, eh?
Definitely. That would be an intelligent move on Midway's part, to right a past wrong. They could throw in every previous version (ala the 15th Ann SF PS2 game... and how dare I mention SF here, I know, the game blows) and just for the hell of it, throw in some extra pallette swaps - like Khameleon and Frost (light blue Kitana swap). See, the colored ninjas could be cool if only it wasn't a crux for skimping out on the good stuff.
I agree completely about the name. Trilogy is terrible. Not only is it misleading it's caused MANY fans in the community to believe that it's story isn't canon, when in fact it's a very important part of the mythos.
I wish it had kept the title "MK 3 Plus", which it was known by early in development.
Classic Shang wasn't able to be in because he was played by Ho Sung Pak, who had stopped working with Midway. The 4 characters they had as classics were the ONLY ones they could. Every other actor had severed their ties with Midway previously.

Also, as was mentioned, there were issues with the quality of graphics from the earlier MKs I believe. MK1 had some horrible graphics for the characters when it came to the pallet swapping with the ninjas, the colors bled out and everything and it just looked very bad compared to MK2 and MK3. THey were able to save MK1 Raiden without any changes, probably because there wasn't really a pallet there, just the dirty and clean versions of him for P1 and P2. They almost saved MK1 Kano, but they had to give him a new victory stance and had to redo his heart rip fatality. Again, he didn't have a pallet issue because P2 was just dirtier. I think if they put characters like the MK1 ninjas in, they would have looked like trash.
Personally, Trilogy never let me down much. I would have liked all the backgrounds, but frankly a lot of the early backgrounds were subpar compared to the newer games and would have looked out of place. They had at least 1 version of every character, 2 versions of some, lots of stages and musics. I was real cool with it.
The thing that was most important to me was that the PSX version (and the PC version to a lesser extent) reproduced UMK3-Arcade style gameplay extremely well. That tight gameplay coupled with the faster speed on the PSX versus the arcade (partly because of cut frames) made it into a kickass game.
