I've been playing around with mavado alot lately and found that he definitely does not suck THAT bad. He's definitely top tier material but he shouldn't be bottom either. His Hookswords are devastating...

I like to use his special move to set them up for the 2,4,4,b+3 combo which does quit a bit of damage. The only area he is really lacking is in the special move department...

Yeah, i have experienced that a bit

But his special move with Hookswords is really good for setting them up for a really damaging combo.

I always liked Mavado, but I stopped using him since everyone has been saying he sucks. Maybe I'll give him another go...

I definitely don't think he is top tier but he can be devastating if you play him right. Plus he haves to be one of the funnest characters to play as in the game...
and why is this? i think that reptile is because of his crab style

Mavado isn't really a bad character... It's just he can be punished so easily if just about any move is blocked, and not to mention his special moves (both) are not that great. I suppose if you could somehow work that knowledge into how you use him he could be quite an effective character... You know, kinda get used to the reaction times and just go off of that. Problem is, it would take a lot of time and practice to use him effectively. Which is a shame because his alternate costume makes him look so freakin' cool.

Indeed, i played against my friends all day with him i was winning pretty consistently. It did suck if his moves got blocked but that is why you ALWAYS use a setup before you go for a big combo.

I think Kabal would have replaced him MUCH better.

he sucks if u only rely on special attacks

he is very fast! and u can win a fight in 10 seconds with him just by rushing with some punches

Well, yeah, but only if the hits connect. Like I said, Mavado's main problem is his lack of good special moves. This basically makes him an up-close kind of fighter which isn't a bad thing unless you are fighting another character that has good long rang special moves in their arsenal like Kung Lao.

Mavado can be used very effectively if you are willing to be patient and attack only when you are certain of connecting. Using him defensively is the best idea in my opinion. Rushing will get Mavado blasted unless you are quick with the block button. grin

Okay, im guessing you mean the special move button here.
But the thing you've confused me about is, that move knocks the opponent on their ass (when connected), and that combo can be blocked high, so why exactly doesn't the opponent block as they are falling/hit the ground (after all, blocking is like a necessity in this game).
Then as you come in with the combo, it's instantly blocked and countered at the end of it (especially with b+3).

I use the special move button to convince them I'm going to hit low... but then i hit high and catch them with a big combo.

I also think Mavado is a little underrated. While he lacks good low moves in his unarmed styles his Hookswords style has two very good low moves which will almost always hit (4 & 5). Why so? Former one is confusing in its execution for your opponent and latter one has an automatic sidestep. How good can it get? :)

I rarely use his propelling move, unless I'm almost certain to catch my opponent by surprise or if I'll have a guaranteed hitter (like when my opponent does a neijin or a taunt).

I think especially Long Fist is a bit underestimated. When you see your opponent is blocking, never use 1,1,b+2 because you'll get hurt. While you're busy doing the first two hits you can see if he's blocking or not. If so, go for the 1,1,2 and you're safe. If not, move in for the 1,1,b+2, then b+2 and then 1,1,2. You'll have a 25% combo. Not bad for a "bad" style such a Long Fist, methinks.

Mavado's main problem, In my opinion, is his lack of a projectile move, and he's the only character in the game (besides Moloch) that doesn't have one. Because of this, and someone else pointed this out earlier, is that he's very much a close in fighter. If you're playing against an adept Shang Tsung player, for instance, you're pretty much screwed. His hookswords are about his only redeeming feature, but they are easy enough to avoid again if you keep your distance, so IMO he really doesn't have much going for him.

I really wish Midway put Kabal in there instead of Mavado...that would have been so kickarse, Kabal was one of my favourite fighters in MK3 and MK Trilogy...
