Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play for the PSP was released on the PSN yesterday for 9.99. It has MK1-3 included in the bundle.

It definitely has it's issues, but as someone who's never owned a copy of MK3 before, it serves it's purpose. I haven't played that game in ages and it was nice to re-visit.

MK1 is fairly decent, at least in comparison to the other two. There are minor and major audio issues in all three. MK2 and MK3 both have quite a few loading issues, but I'm sure all of this is known already.

It's pretty cool to have the classic MK's on the PSP even if it's not quite perfect.

Heh I came here to post this.

Extended Play was a pretty fun game but the load times were horrible and made the game a chore to play (the same with MK Unchained). Running them off a memory stick (either by PSN or... other means) makes the games a million times more enjoyable.

I'm downloading the game off PSN right now. There's only a few issues with the games. One of the arenas in MK1 is missing the background music, you can't hit the Start button during the "Toasty!" messages in MK 2 and 3 (it just brings up the pause menu), the characters don't have shadows in one of the MK 2 arenas (I want to say the Dead Pool), and the blood during Fatalities is always red during MK3 (Sheeva has green blood during the fights and the cyborgs have their black oil as well, but when you do a Fatality on one of them it's red just like the normal characters).

I wish Smoke saved in MK3 though. It's such a pain in the ass to do his unlock code every time you turn the game back on.

Do you have two PSPs, or is there a way to unlock Smoke with one PSP that I'm not aware of? I only know of the kombat code at the end.

I wish they had him unlocked from the start since he's not so secret anymore, and the fact that a big chunk of users don't have the means to unlock him. Oh well, I'm having too much fun for it to be a major issue.

I'd gladly put down money for a disc that included MK1, 2, UMK3, MK4( or Gold), and MK:DA, that was ported with care to the hand helds. Would that fit on a UMD? I'm not an expert, but Unchained fit on a disc, and MK:DA doesn't have a conquest mode, so it seems like it might be feasible. That would be awesome if it could be done.

Oh and I wish they included cheats as well. I understand why they would want to include arcade versions, but for a lot of people the cheats in MK2 and 3 for the home consoles were such a huge part of the original experience.

I agree with you on the cheats aspect. I can understand why they don't do them in games today (with online modes and trophies/achievements), but part of the fun of the console ports of the earlier games was the cheat codes.

I have two PSPs. I have a hacked one with CFW and I have a 3000 model with the latest official firmware from Sony. I decided to get a second one for official firmware because I got tired of waiting for CFW updates and worrying if a new game I just bought would be playable without upgrading.

I can unlock Smoke with the standard kombat code, but I also found a CW Cheat (it's like a Game Genie for CFW users) that lets you play as Smoke. However it makes every background the portal though, so it's kinda lame. :p

I used to rip my UMDs and play them off a memory stick, but now I just buy all my PSP games off the PSN anymore so that doesn't really matter. What surprises me though is that the load times on Midway Arcade Treasures are shorter on my CFW PSP than on my 3000 with the PSN download. They both are playing off a memory stick, so they should load about the same.

As for file sizes, the Mortal Kombat Unchained download off the PSN is 1 gig. The UMD can hold up to 1.9 gigs of data, which is almost double the size of Unchained. There was a version of Armageddon supposedly being made for the PSP (which is probably why the PSP version of Deception had the Armageddon battle columns instead of the 3D mountain in the console versions) but for whatever reason it never got released. I remember someone hacking the UMD version of Unchained and finding a lot of Armageddon coding in it. It was probably in the works but never saw the light of day (just like all the MK vs DC Universe DLC; Quan Chi and Harley Quinn were supposedly finished but Midway went bankrupt and never released them).

I'd kill for Deadly Alliance and Armageddon to get ported over to the PSP or 3DS though. I'd like to see MK Gold as well, but I did rip all my PS1 Mortal Kombat games (MK 3, MK Trilogy, MK 4, and MKM: Sub-Zero) on my CFW PSP so I do have a very decent selection of portable MK (MK 1-3 on Midway Arcade Treasures, the four PS1 games mentioned above, and the PSN version of Unchained).
EDIT: I just checked both of my PSPs and on my CFW PSP MAT is 619mb whereas on my other PSP the PSN download is 447mb. The reason why my ripped copy of MAT loads faster (and quite a bit faster at that) is because the PSN version is compressed more it seems. That's pretty lame. Still the PSN version loads a crap-ton faster than playing with the UMD inside my PSP, so it's not a total loss. :p
I also thought I'd compare my ripped MK Unchained file to the PSN download. Likewise my CFW PSP loads Unchained faster than the PSN version because the file size is bigger (my almost 500mg!). I guess Sony is really concerned about compressing the PSN versions as much as they can to make the files smaller.
That also explains why the opening FMV video on the PSN version is choppy compared to the other version (my ripped copy plays the FMV as smooth as ever). Color me surprised. I was always annoyed at how crappy the opening movie looked on the PSN version. :p
