MK 1 character origin
Ok going through alot of aspect of MK ONE I have come up with some ideas. I have always wondered if Kano could be explained.
Here are my ideas:
Liu Kang is obviously Bruce Lee
Johnny Cage-Van Damme(as much as I dislike him)
Sonya-Cynthia Rothrock
Raiden-Big Trouble In Little China and the hundreds of ninjas from stuff like the Baby Cart series.
Sub-Zero, Reptile, Scorpion-Five Deadly Venoms ninjas right down to the outfits.
Goro-Bolo from Enter The Dragon
Shang Tsung-the token "old master" from any number of martial arts influence. i.e. Kung Fu or The Big Boss
The background court yard is obviously from Enter The Dragon.
What the hell is Kano though? The best answer I can come up with is the Terminator. Anybody else got ideas?? Any other ideas on back grounds as well??

I think you are right on the money with that stuff. And don't forget Shang also looks like the main badguy from Big trouble also, at least at the end when he has the really white skin and he floats around everywhere instead of walking.
Kano, I do think came from them wanting a badguy that was just a dirty looking badguy and they thought the terminator idea was cool so they gave him an eye. Just a guess, but it seems to fit how the MK Team worked.

Liu Kang= Bruce Lee:- Mostly the weird, Kung Fu screams he does... But he did evolve over time to differ from Bruce, in that his hair became longer and his outfits gave him a similar, but different style of his own.
Lee has nothing to do with the Shaolin, however.
Yeah, Liu Kang is mostly a Bruce Lee derivative, but he's not a clone.
On this vein, I think it's appropriate that the Mk:D Liu Kang used Lee's famous Nunchaku weapons.
Johnny Cage is kinda like the stereotype Hollywood star who trys to copy the Bruce Lee style, yet glosses it over with an amusingly cheesy Hollywood veneer. I doubt Bruce Lee ever existed in the MK world, though.
Law from Tekken is even more like Lee; he's more or less, a direct clone although this is no bad thing.

Well I am only talking about the first game...but Liu is absolutely taken from Bruce Lee..
Lets see, the flying kick, the speed, and last but not least..the Shaloin, taken straight from Enter the Dragon description...
"Lee, a member of the Shaolin Temple is asked by a man to go to a tournament that is being on an island that belongs to man named Han, who is a former Shaolin monk, who went renegade. The man tells Lee that they believe that Han is involved in Opium trade and white slavery. He wants Lee to go there and try and get him the evidence they need so that go there and arrest Han. Lee agrees but is then also told that Han's men tried to abduct his sister three years ago and rather than submit she committed suicide."
Hmmmmm does any of this sound familiar? I guess Kung isn't a girl...and Bolo doesn't have 4 arms, and Han deals in opium to drug up people instead of stealing souls?? but what more do you need? Hell now that I think about it, John Saxon is Johnny Cage!!! lol
Perhaps you should watch the movie and understand how big of a impression that it made on MK!
P.S. Great point on Big Trouble and the old man.
Damn...Terminator though, I still wish there was something better!

Yeah me too. The terminator basis would be kinda weak. There's probably some kung fu where someone got part of their face replaced with metal. I know there were ones with metal hands and stuff, and I can almost picture what someone with a partly metal face in an old kung fu movie would look like too.
Well dreemernj you report back when you find out....and I will do the same, deal? For me it is like the missing link. lol Though the original Terminator is a good movie it just doesn't fit in with the Mortal concept. To me the "pretty boy" is much more forgiveable with Johnny Cage cause like you I have seen them everywhere, but I want a direct link with a metal headed, red eyed bad ass in an asian movie for Kano!
Oh yeah, a screen shot would help. Perhaps thats what I should do with the rest of them.

Oh, yeah, you're right!
Although Bruce Lee himself is not Shaolin, in Enter The Dragon he plays himself as one.
Yeah, Mk 1 Liu is a Bruce Lee stereotype, I would agree.
I hadn't seen Enter The Dragon for ages; I'd completely forgotten!
...Law is more of a clone, though.
Somebody made a thread similar to this, about a month back. Look for it in the archives... I think it's called; "what was the film with the yellow ninja".
In that thread it said something about a Kung Fu film called, something like; "Crane Fist".
Supposedly there is a yellow ninja in this film who actually has a klaw to get people over to him! To top it off, the main Character's name is... you guessed it; "Liu Kang!"
I have never seen this film and I'm just quoting, but if anyone knows what I'm talking about, or has actually been to that small thread, then please post.
