How many Mortal Kombat games are there on the PC, and are they any good?

Are any of them worth getting?

The only one maybe worth getting is MKT. If there was an arcade perfect PC version of UMK3 for sale, that'd be the one worth getting.
MK1-3 are on the MAT for the PC, but it sounds like they didn't do as good a job as they should have on those. MK4 for the PC is heinous. MKT for the PC is a direct port of one fo the PSX versions. Its not a port of the greatest hits version, but the differences aren't all that huge for casual play.
MK1 through Ultimate have all been emulated in their arcade forms as well, but asking where to get copies of the arcade roms is a big NO-NO on any board, since using ROMs is pretty much illegal, similar to downloading MP3s without paying for them.

get MK3 Dos version and MK1 & MK2 CD Versions if you are pc fan
I have played every MK game released on PC. And they are: MK1, MK2, MK3, MKT and MK4 (UMK3 was never sold as a PC game). They aren't that bad, really. Especially MK3 and MKT. Although MK1 and MK2 has pretty poor midi music and MK4 is kind of plastic in the appearance (and I don't mean flexible). However, PC conversion has the best lighting effects due to the accelerators. And you can play MK4 Enhanced version on a PC, too. You can find it on this page BTW.
So as a recap, I can say that PC versions are in any case still fun to play.

So MKT and MK3 are the best ones?
That's good. MK3 is my favorite classic game.

MK1 CD Version has arcade audio, no?

Use MAME. Just that. For MK4 you should play PC version. It is good.

Actually, I've never heard of MK1 PC CD. MK3, MKT and MK4 were released on CDs, MK2 on both CD and floppies, but MK1 as far as I know only on floppies.

MK1 came out on floppy disk, good port, bad midi music.
MK2 came out also on floppy disk, good port, bad midi music.
MK1 and MK2 came out on CD, both the same port, except that MK1 now had arcade music.
MK3 came out on CD, the DOS Port is an okay port, the graphics were really muddy, but good music and gameplay. The Windows version was a port of the PSX version. Excellent music, graphics, and gameplay.
MKT came out on CD - a port of the PSX version.
MK4 came out on CD, Windows only. I wasn't too happy with it. The gameplay and music were good, but the graphics were really blocky.

I've never seen a second Windows version of MK3. Interesting. Any idea when that got published? Its not listed anywhere as having existed.

Yeah its the same as PSX, even the cheat codes are the same

It was released about a year after the DOS version, which was around December 1996.
It was indeed a port of the PSX version (it had even the same menu). It was graphicaly improved in comparison to the DOS version and had simpler way to unlock bonus characters and insert other codes, too.

I have MK 3 AND 4 AND TR , all cd versions.
MK 1 AND 2, even tho i am running windows 98 se, its impossible to play them for some odd reason.

Wow, when the previous version was superior, they decided to make a port of the PSX like MKT? I wish they would have gone for arcade quality on the PC version of MKT.

But why would the MK team do that when they could just drop the PSX game onto the PC and go to town. Cackling all the way as they scream "Hah, IPX netplay only you fools! And even that doesn't work so well! Muahahahahaha! Its official, we suck....but it doesn't matter, we're rich! Muahahahahaha!" etc etc etc.

I would imagine it would be since MK3 dos was really quite well made and IIRC MK3 for PSX was pretty lame. I wish I had MK3 for PSX or MK3 win to try out. MK3 for PSX I haven't played in forever and MK3 win, well, never heard of :)

I always dug that MK1+MK2 cover art.
And wow what a walk down memory lane with MK3 for Win (Thanks Psykosonik
) Once I started it I remembered everything about it from the PSX version. I really thought the menus looked awesome, but wow the game is not very good, lol. I can't get it to play right on my comp (had to play it in a small window on a Win2k virtual server) but I could see enough to remember. I'll have to get it running full screen full speed and see how comboing works in it. I have to say, I hate how low the energy bars are
They are so far from the top of the screen to mask how tiny the characters are. Oh well, thank god they scrapped this engine.
I remember seeing screenshots for I think MKT for PSX, a very early one, that used a select screen background similar to Ultimates and from how low the energy bars were it looked like they were using the MK3 for PSX engine. Scary.
Next I'll compare this to MKT for PSX to see how much (or little) they really changed
Finding a classic MK that is new to me after all these years. What a wonderful thing for a nerd like me.

IIRC MK3 for DOS was arcade perfect (other than the codes to unlock smoke and stuff), except the only difference I noticed was the sound effect for Kabal's blade spin and Nightwolf's projectile reflect move was different, it had a higher pitch and was louder

The graphics of MK3 DOS never seemed up to par with MK3 arcade. The characters are smaller and have fewer colors. But its the closest of any of the ports to being arcade perfect as far as I can tell.
