MK Trilogy/UMK3 computer AI question

Just got back to beloved MK Trilogy, since years when I was a kid. :D
Now something about the AI makes me wonder. Does the computer cheat, like recover faster than the player character and having "the right" to get his attack through when both of us do the same attack at the same time? The computer seems to "mimic" what I do, and it almost always gets to make his attack when I run up to him and try a combo or a throw. I try to throw, he throws me. I wait, duck and try to uppercut, he ducks and immediately uppercuts me.
It makes the combat feel weird that the AI gets the privilege of his attacks overwriting mine.
Is this just how it was made, or is there something about controlling the character that I don't know, something about recovering from hits, throws, uppercuts etc? The game system is fairly simple so I wouldn't expect there to be stuff like that, but the computer seems to even visually get its bearings faster than me after getting hit, and its timing of jump punches countering my own is just ridiculous sometimes.
In other words - any strategy tips for fighting the computer? :D
Thanks. Any discussion would be superb.

Of course, the computer's AI is wack. Kind of the point of these games was hours and hours of 2P fun, but naturally you're going to want to play 1P and beat the game, etc.
The computer has been granted powers that would never be granted to a normal player. For instance, Liu Kang can do bicycle kicks without charging it for 3 seconds first, thus doing 2 bike kicks in a row. Kabal can do multiple Spin Dashes on you, although this doesn't hurt you. The computer can also throw you, even if you're in the middle of a special move, in the way a human opponent never can.
The best AI tip I could give would be to "act" like a poor player or one who's nervous to attack, getting a few seemingly lucky hits in there. This will fool the computer into going easy on you.

Thanks for the confirmation.
Yes, 2P is of course the soul of this sort of game but it's also fun to hone combo skills etc against the computer, playing on a laptop for example somewhere away from home :)
Anyway, yeah. I notice a few different behaviors from the AI, and I get the feeling that he can beat your ass if he just happens to want to. The AI just switches on that "countering all attacks, overriding close contact privileges" mode and...say goodbye. Then sometimes it makes sure to keep a distance of a couple of steps, and never blocks any projectiles or charging attacks.
It's kind of shame that this is the case. There are so many difficulty levels that I don't see why the computer needs to cheat anyway. I mean with practice, you can almost keep up a similar pace yourself, so it's all "possible". But in reality you can't because the AI's cheating undermines all your efforts ;p
Nevertheless, I say Trilogy WINS over the new generation MKs, though they're somewhat cool as well.
