MK1 Hand Held question... about the year of it

on the back of the tiger hand held game: Mortal Kombat... the date says 1988, but MK didn't come around until 1992. So whats up with that? Does the 1988 mean the year that Tiger was created or what?

Uhh... I'm pretty sure that's the year Tiger was created.

k, just asking because on all my other MK hand helds.. they have the year of the game's release.
