Alright so in History class I learned that MK1 was based off of ancient Chinese history, the second Chinese dynasty, the Shang dynasty (Shang Tsung), were cruel and evil, and according to The Mandate of Heaven, they could be overthrown, so there was a revolt (Mortal Kombat tounament). But one ose above all and overthrew the Shang dynasty, you guessed it, a guy named Woo Wang, remind you of anyone? I thought so. So in conclusion according to Chinese history, Woo Wang (Liu Kang) overthrew the Shang (Tsung) dynasty. THE END

Actually, Mortal Kombat was based on the 70's Kung-Fu flick 'Enter the Dragon' coupled with a few names borrowed from asian mythology. But, what you've been taught as fact is actually a very messed up version of the Chinese novel Fengshen Bang.
In actuality, Shang Zhou commited suicide after his personal army sided with a marching army of Zhou Rebels. He would be succeded Wu Wang, who ruled China about 30 or so years after Shang Zhou's death.
