Mortal Kombat Trilogy - Cheap way to make a buck
At least that's how I see it. Don't get me wrong, I've played it a million times because it's MK, but observe this:
-It should have had every finishing move. I wanted to see Classic Subby do his Head Rip to Sheeva; Scorpion do his Spear Slash to Kabal, Liu Kang back on the dance floor, etc.
-Why wasn't classic Shang in it? At least the version of MK2, with the ingenious Inner Ear Fatality.
-Bosses and Chameleon should have had endings at least.
-Aggressor was the worst MK feature ever. Maybe not worst idea as much as most underdeveloped. With a bit of thought it could have been cool... maybe.
-Instead of adding elements from all 3 MK games, they just stuck new stuff in MK3.
-They didn't have the Pit II Fatality, which was the best Stage Fatality
-Ummm... what else? I'll sleep on it.

Classic Sub-zero does have his head rip, however they do a black out on it for some sort of strange censoring idea they had for it. I don't really know why. It wouldn't have been hard to program it so he removes the head and goes into his stance and stick in the spine from MK1, but they didn't because they kept it as is from UMK3 arcade. They added his ground ice impale fatailty however. The other fatalities were for versions of the characters that weren't in the game.

I wasn't terribly disappointed by this, nor were many other people, there could have been something, but oh well, not a big deal.

Agreed. Just turn it off though.

No they adaptaded old characters to UMK3's engine, which was a good idea, but they chinced it.

Agreed again, however, they didn't have the animation frames for like 9/10 of the cast for falling off the pit 2 facing the screen. It again wouldn't have been hard to hack in the characters just moving left to right a frame each way when they get tripped, and land in the the middle of a fatality dance frame, but that might have looked too hacked. This I considered to be a big loss at the time since they included the stage, the least they could have done was make a new fatality for it and just have them fall off the side at the side view.

Well, since not everyone had a complete set of finishers anyway, they should've allowed you to knock the MK2 characters in the Pit II at least.
The actor I believe had a lawsuit with them, which is also why MK2 Kitana, Mileena and Jade weren't in it, and MK1 Sonya, and something with Liu Kang from MK1 and 2 as well. Daniel Pesina (Johnny Cage), Elizabeth Malecki(Sonya), Catalin Zamiar(Kitana etc.), Philip Ahn (Shang Tsung MK2), and Ho Sung Pak( Liu Kang MK1 and 2 and Shang Tsung MK1) all I believe in some way didn't allow their likeness to be shown in MKT, aside from the well known Lawsuit with MK1 characters, so that's why. |
Ah. Well, I knew that Pesina did, but I didn't know all of those others did. Couldn't they have just decked out Shang's "new" actor (what was his name... John something? For some reason John Turk comes to mind... bah, I used to know all of the MK actors...) in classic MK2 garb?
My actual point was, instead of amalgating everything in the MK series, they just slapped it into the UMK3 engine. If they would have taken just a little bit more time, it could have been infinitely better.
I was also very disappointed that MKT didn't have a few other MK1 stages. They were missing the Palace Gates, the Warrior Shrine (my favorite from MK1), and the Throne Room. And the Courtyard (which was named Kung Fu Part 1 for some odd reason) didn't have the monks clapping their hands after the round was over. Also, I wanted to hear the original MK1 music instead of the MK3 music that plagued the MK1 stages. Furthermore, the Portal (MK2 stage) had the wrong music. It had the Kombat Tomb music but was supposed to have Kahn's Arena's music.

I can't say I could ever call it a cheap way to make a buck. I still consider it the most entertaining MK ever made. It had the speed and fun of the UMK3 game engine with a huge number of characters. If I had to guess I've played the game tens of thousands of times, mostly against MK2KungBroken, and it was never not fun. Its just terrific gameplay. The game lacked in the other areas, but I guess I don't focus on them too much, so long as its good to play.

The Warrior Shrine would have to have all the character statues which would give the stage a rediculous amount of length.
Speaking of stages (and may lead to the cause of few MK1 music), a lot of MK1 stages weren't added possibly because of software space.
Trilogy was already mega-packed so the team probably weren't able to add more stages (from MK1) and the music.
The lawsuit was in the mid 90's. Several of the actors filed it against Midway over a contract dispute. They(the actors) lost.
I'm not sure why the MK1 stages are gone. Throne Room and Warrior Shrine show the old actors but there's no reason Palace Gates couldn't be in, it's in MK1 Kano's ending picture after all...

I often wondered about the Palace Gates. I mean the levels only take up roughly 300KB on the disc, and I think MKT for PSX had about 80 megs of space left over on it. I dont know about the music for any of the old levels but definately the Palace Gates level could have fit. At least for PSX.
