Need Tips (MK1-MK3)

Yeah, so I have to admit. I suck at the old MK games! I was just hoping that some intermediate old school players can give me tips on how to play better.
What really gets me friggin angry is the artificial intelligence. All the computer does is know EXACTLY what move I ever plan to do, no matter what and they counter it. This leaves me never attacking because I am scared they will counter easily, which then becomes very tedious and boring.
So, do any MK1, MK2, or MK3 players have any good pointers on how to get better?
Thanks.

Reactionary AI is the worst thing in the world. I hate getting uppercutted while im uppercuting. The AI knows withing The first 2 frames, what you are doing and how to hit you.
Dont play it to beat the AI, play it against other people online if you can. Personally, MK2 is my worst MK game because I never really too the time to go back and master it after MK3 came out. And I was young back then so I never really wanted to be the best, just loved playing.
wihtout the Run button, It seemed so slow, but going back now, Ive been playing for almost a week straight and im getting the hang of it.
Just youtube some videos of the character you want to be good with, watch how they string together combos and when they initiate moves, try and duplicate it and You will get better faster ythan you think.
One move I really concentrates on was a double air-punch. once with a jump at them and as soon as it connects, initiate the tele-punch with HP button, you almost have to hit the d-pad/joystick commands before you even hit the person.
Its just practice, I relaly SUCKED bad and I won like 10-12 rounds in a row last night online.
Just keep on givin'er

I found a method through someone on youtube that shows a walkthrough with Smoke. MK3 walkthrough to be precise. Anyway, he used Smoke, and was able to perform some lengthy combos. But is you want to avoid the combos, I have learned, but not quite mastered the RURU method. (Run Uppercut Run Uppercut). It's pretty simple but all you have to worry about is the timing. First, get your opponent into the air. Roundhouse kicks, and maybe a small combo to get started. But to really pull this off, you have to think defensively. When a character flips into the air, uppercut them. When you do this, run toward him and try it again. It's basic timing and skill. And if your not really good at it early, keep practicing. It takes a good eyesight to catch the characters from getting up. To be able to pull this off, your opponent also has to hit the ground. Before he does, run forward and give it about 1 second. Then uppercut him again. It also helps to use a character that has some type of, what I like to call "lures". (Attacks that will get you closer to your opponent). Things like Kitana's fan spin (causes your opponent to hang into the air), Reptile's Beam Bomb (when hit, causes your opponent to go toward you, and of course Sub-Zero's freeze and Scorpions Spear.
This is just a suggestion. If you have tried this out, then keep trying. Eventually it will come to you and soon enough you should be able to memorize how the characters fall, and when to uppercut them again. All it takes is timing!

Works best for MK2 (arcade and home versions).

I was having the same problem you were. I went to the game section of this site, and printed out each characters moves and fatalities for MKT, which really helped alot.
For a starting character, I'd suggest Noob Saibot, I consider him the best 'jumble combo' character. My favorite combo is down - forward X (smoke cloud), run at your opponent, Square - Square - X - Triangle (This combo ends in uppercut), as the opponents in the air, press down - up to do the teleport slam. While your opponents in the air, press down - forward - X again, and smoke cloud him again, and repeat until he's dead. Although this combo doesn't work on bosses.
Hope this helps!

When it comes to the classic Mortal Kombat games, you really need to think one step ahead of your opponent.
My best piece of advice is avoid using the uppercut, especially in Mortal Kombat II. Characters such as Jax, Johnny Cage, Mileena, and Kitana will throw you out of it every time.
Basically, stay your distance and fire off projectiles, then rush in when they're open.

If you are playing "Mortal Kombat" on the Sage Genesis and you don't wont your opponent to do a gran finality wih a "fatality" , perform a counter by hoding block, the start botton, when the screen shows "Finsih Him" . Let go after falling to the ground. This will keep one's fighter from being attacted by a "Fatality". On a side note, if one is on the bridge of the pit, one can still get knocked onto spikes at the bottom of the pit. This only happens if and only if the victorious fighter preforms and makes contact wih an upprcut after the screen shows "Finish Him" to his or her "lifeless" opponent.
