I seem to remember reading an interview around the time of (the original) Mortal Kombat's arcade release where Ed Boon stated that the game didn't start out with 7 characters in mind, only 6. He went on to say that the game was in a playable format with 6 characters at a preview show, but after deliberation, a female character was added... bringing the total to 7.

Does anyone else remember reading this interview? And has anyone seen or played this beta version of MK?

I remember reading an interview where Boon or Tobias said that Sonya and Kano were the least popular characters in MK1 and that's why they stuffed them in the background in MK2.

That's partially true, but it was mainly for storyline as well with MK2 introducing awesome new characters to replace the missing Kano and Sonya from MK1 who would later on eventually pop up again in future MKssmile
