Maybe I am extremely computer illiterate, but I have a problem running MKII under MS DOS and the installation. It keeps saying I gotta problem with somethin, but I don't know what it is. If someone could please help me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Whats the error exactly?? If i remember rightly for some reason the installer doesn't work on newer computers, but u can just copy all the files over to your HD and play the game like that!!

Hope that helps!!

what type of windows are you running? actually, i am sorry to say but mk 2 was pretty glitchy..at least my pc copy was. i could play it, but w/out sound. i had the same problem with mk1 for pc. anyways, robs727 is correct, you could try just copying everything to one folder, and running the program from there, but it would not be a perfect game. i strongly recommend however, (assuming you have a fast computer) that you download the MAME emulator and get the mortal kombat game roms. it's the perfect arcade translation and it works fine!

or better yet, just wait for the midway arcade treasures 2. it's going to have mk 1,2, and possibly 3 and i am sure that they are going to be the perfect arcade versions, all that is required is patience.

anyways, if you need more help, let me know.
hope you get to play it :)

when you say it won't be perfect do you mean compared to playing on MAME or coz of the way its installed?? Coz mk2 installer just copies all the files over anyway!

what i meant by saying that it wasn't going to be a perfect game was that the pc version of mk itself is very glitchy. there's a lot of bugs that i encountered when I played it on my computer. i am not referring to the copying or installation process, i'm referring to the game's performance on the computer. it might have been my computer, but i also tried running it on 4 different computer, and it was pretty much the same problems. The most notable problem was the sound, i could never get a good arcade sound...also, sometimes the fighters would be different, weird colors...like a color distortion. finally, the game would freeze on some of the fatalities. there was plenty of other issues, but i can't remember. anyways, i just know that the pc version of mk2 is buggy. that's why i recommend getting MAME...i have not yet experienced any problems with it...

There's a few things you need to explain before asking for help.

Is it the original MKII release or the MKII from the MK & MKII compilation?

What OS are you trying to run it under?

What error are you receiving?

The original MK and MKII releases were meant to be ran in total DOS. Not from within Windows. That would create problems, much like the ones psx2k1 was describing. However, if you have the compilation versions, they're win32 resident, meaning they were made to run within Windows and not total DOS.

Thanks a lot for the help. I am running it on Windows 98. This MKII verion is the DOS version. When I install it, it seems to install correctly, everything goes right until it says "press enter to go to prompt, then type MK2." When I type MK2, the Acclaim logo comes up, as well as the PROBE, but then the screen goes blank. I think the game is running because i press F1 for a one player game and i see life bars, just no fighters. IF someone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks

I'm having the exact same problem. I have Windows ME, though.

Yeah, I have to agree. I remember back in the day trying out the PC version of MK2 and it was pretty buggy. The sound was just plain awful, no way around it. Midi music? Such crap.

If you really really want to try it I suggest trying out some of the programs designed to emulate Dos, if any are all that good, I haven't really tried any. If you have a fast enough compe you can try to set up a VirtualPC and install DOS on it. Or, you could even get a newer release of DOS and make a self-booting CD or something to just start it up in a true DOS without having to worry about installing the OS on your comp permanently.

Right now my Laptop is set up with Windows 2000 and MS Dos 7.2. I haven't found any DOS programs that don't love to run in Dos on it, plus I downloaded win 3.1, win 95, win 98 and win ME front ends for it that run from the command prompt just like win 3.1. Its nifty stuff and they seem to install into Virtual Machine pretty well.

chinoman,

i am sorry to inform you, but i doubt that you are going to be able to play the game problem free. being that you have windows 98, you can restart into just msdos mode. the reason you have a black screen and you hear the mk music and all is because Win98 is running, i know because i had the exact same problem. this game must be run strictly under msdos in order for it to work. so what you do is pretty simple. restart your comp and choose to restart into msdos mode. from there, search for your folder where the executable file for mk is...for example, you might need to do this:

cd c:windows/desktop..or something
if you noticed, it's in a certain directory...like when you are in msdos mode, you notice that the computer started msdos from a certain location in the computer, usually it's
c:windows/msdos or something, can't remember cuz i don't run windows 98 anymore.

anyways, once you figure out how to execute the mk2 file from msdos mode, then you will be able to play the game, but be aware that it is not going to be anywhere close to the arcade version. as i mentioned before, either get another computer with at least 256 ram and a descent cpu so you can run MAME (multi arcade machine emulator) to play the arcade perfect version of mk or just wait for Midway arcade treasures (if i were you, i would wait for the aracade treasures). The reason i tell you to get a fast computer is b/c MAME requires a fast speed to run the mortal kombat game, otherwise it's going to be really slow on Windows 98.
anyways, i hope this helps...let me know if you need more help
