Well, not exactly.
He throws a roped spear.
It only comes out of his hands, as a serpent in the movies.
It was probably that way in the movies to intimidate the opponent, and to look cool , and also to make him less human-like.

Oh, well... I guess I didn't know it's supposed to come out of his hand afterall...

But he sure does throw the spear really fast... He throws it so fast it actually does look like its coming from his hand... It doesnt even look like he reaches back and grabs it. Lol.
