When were they ever explicitly referred to as being gods?

Other than Fujin, I just remember them being referred to as the temple guardians (earth, water, fire).

Anyone?

Pretty sure it was in the MK4 comic book that came with the PC version of MK4. Used to be available online at mkaustralia, but I don't think that site exists anymore.

Anyone confirm?

I always thought the Fire God, and to a lesser extent the Water god, would have made badass characters in later games.

Yes, Fujin is referred to a god in the MK4 comic that came with the PC version. Liu Kang and Kai are sparring and they see something fall from the sky in the distance. His bio also mentions it: "Better known as the God of Wind"

Don't know if the cut scenes mentioned anything but here they are on YT:

I bought MKMSZ used, so I don't know if the instruction manual said anything about the gods.

Thanks, saiZero. In that video, it does exactly specify, which actually leads me to more confusion. Quan Chi mentions the gods of Earthrealm, and THEN mentions the guardians, never actually explicitly calling them gods.

Hmmm, interesting. Thanks for the help!

To my understanding, the Elder Gods (or even Raiden) appointed the elemental Gods of earth to be guardians of the amulet. I guess since Raiden was the one to actually defeat Shinnok millions of years ago in their war, he's kind of the god in charge over the other elemental Gods.
So they're guardians, but at the same time Gods too.

And for your viewing/reading pleasure:

More specifically, MK4's comic: http://www.kamidogu.com/gallery/comics/mortalkombat.php?issue=4&page;=0 (be sure to click the "NEXT PAGE" button on the bottom right hand side of the comic scans, took me a while to realize that lol)

Thankfully, I keep my MKM SZ instruction manual in my desk for quick referencing the game's story.
It says, "Rayden [sic] buried the amulet deep within the mountains of Asia. He then created a massive temple within the mountains to house the amulet and appointed four guardians as the protectors of Shinnok's sacred amulet."
With that, there are pictures of the guardians, including Fujin, and all are called "God of [their respective element]" and even in the game's credits, they are called Gods, so they've always been Gods, but they've just been given the role of guardians as well with regards to the amulet.
for the tl;dr crowd, they guardians are Gods too.
