Greetings,

When I was browsing through the high level gameplay topic, the tier list and other strats-related topics, something occurred to me.

I think most of us here will agree that MK:DA is a fun game to play. Here's where my question for the good and the expert players comes in. Seeing that everyone is fawning over tier lists and discussing what character has the superior skills, I wonder if, after you've excellently taken the game a part and analysed it thoroughly, if it's any fun to play?

I mean, if I was technically perfect with each character, why would I bother playing with Cyrax if I know Raiden beats him to shreds? What would the fun be in competing against technically perfect players who use the same strats as you do? Sometimes it gets so mechanical here that I think the soul from the game is taken away. This is more than just a romantic digression; one of my brothers plays games at a very technical level too but I always wonder what the fun is in having a perfect game... in the end it's so empty.

Sure, I want to be a better player too and I wonder where I would rank if I had some more competition. I've read some very, very interesting stuff here. But still, the more skill you gain, the more perfect you become... the less interesting the game itself becomes.

At least that's what I think. Any thoughts on this?

Becoming "perfect" is every ones ultimate goal that can never truly be achevied. i have mastered many games to the point of where very few even stand a chance at beating me. but the reason i keep playin is so i can consider myself an unbeatable god. u know, its that level in ur brain that u want to reach where ur name is feared and ur skills are unmatched but you never can quite get there. no matter how good u get there is always someone out there who can either shut u down or provide a good challenge but the odds are that u'll probably never meet that person. thats my thoughts on it ne wayz

I'm not sure of my exact profile stats right now, but I've played about 1700 matches and have a 83% win rate. My goal for now is to get that up to 90%. When you play so often, it gets harder and harder to increase your win ratio ;)

As an MK-Master, I would tell you the best way to get good at MK:DA (or any fighting game for that matter), is to play a lot of 2P - specificly someone that is good. Fighting another human being is a lot more challenging than playing the computer.

Also, find out what the highlights of the game are (weapons, combos, specials) and master them - learn to use them wisely and often. Also, go through seperate fighting style with your favorite people and just remember a few attacks at a time that you like. Once you absorb and learn those, expand and use other moves.

Bingo. I think that's why MKL's formulated tactics rub so many the wrong way. It's not that they don't believe him, it's that they don't WANT to believe him. Believing him ruins the game.

I thought about it too. Some of those tier lists and tactics do really seem to spoil the game. We all want to believe that every stance, move, combo and character in the game is useful. So people start yelling, people get pissed, there's a flame war.

Personally, I spend most of my time playing Cyrax and try to stick my head in the sand about how futile getting so good at him is. He's fun, dammit!

But yeah, the choice seems to be; you can adopt the high level tactics and become a better player, or you can just have try to have fun with MKDA. Tough choice.

Like what was stated before, my goal is to attain true perfection, mastery of all Kombatants and be able to demolish any foe with any character. Unlike many of the others on this board I don't have anyone to rival my skills in MK. Those that I play with, I play few and far between. I Mainly test my skills on the AI with a 50% handicap.

Personally I don't even consider the tier list when I play. I feel as though no character really has a distinct advantage over another. Yeah some have a stronger Offense, but Defense is what counts. Cyrax's name floats around a lot, saying he's at the bottom of the heap. Cyrax can dish out some real damage if played right and can suprise even the most powerful character. It would get pretty boring if everyone felt the same way about each Kombatant...that's why with the technical stuff, I really don't pay attention to it.

I always preferred to play for myself at first. When I start playing a game, for example: MKDA , I don't want to know what is hiding in the koffins. I don't want to know what happens when I beat Konquest mode. I don't want to know the cheapest way to beat Moloch. I want to discover it myself. I'm not the kind of guy to buy a game and then go on the internet to get a FAQ/Walkthrough and the cheats to become invincible, etc... I personnaly think that it ruins the fun that you can have in the game. Now that I have completed MKDA, like many of you here on the forum, I share my ideas and thoughts with the MK Kommunity. I just check for cheats and tips when I'm blocked somewhere and I'm getting tired of it.

Yes, man! I agree with basically your whole post, but I was going to type this exact same post here.

If you want to be great at this game you should be able to win against people using random select. Tournaments for games like this (unless random), where each character is different in their approaches, do prove champions but don't really do 100% justice for the winners and losers.

I think that a true champion should be able to win with any character. And this is possible if you know how to properly defend yourself from each character. In order to do this though, you need to be as good with your opponent's character as you are with your character.

Yes, each character is unique in their own way, but each is based off of the same game engine.

Well as far as Mortal Kombat is concerned, I can never find any competition. With that in mind, If someone of lower skill picks Scorpion, I am ok using a character like Mavado or Cyrax to give an advantage to the other player by using a fighter that is lower on the tier list. In doing so, I create a challenge for myself to win using a lower tier character. Again it doens't have to be a lower tier fighter. Drahmin is a high tier fighter, but lacks in string combos. I will use him against frost, li mei, shang, etc... players with long string combos to see how I can match up. Even though Drahmin is good, I usually find im difficult to use against fighters that have quick combos.

I am far from perfect, and I can't always bust out the 22 hit juggles, but the more I play, the more I enjoy playing. As an experienced player, I don't "try" to win the game. I try and play an exhibition sometimes. Like, letting the health drop to a certain point then seeing if I can still win by busting out counters and reversals into full blown three style combos and juggles. Or fake them out. Or Rather than being the aggressor, i will limit my attacks only after a reversal or sidestep. There are many ways to "have fun" playing. Lately, I have been playing the game of cat and mouse on levels with damage environments. Purposefully juggling characters into the acid spewing statues...
Or into the breakable objects.

Once you get to a highlevel of experience, you can pretty much play anyway you like, and provide any handicaps and still be confident in winning.

At my best, Starting with a 70% handicap is all I could do. At 25% with a decent player I would struggle. But at 30% it would be about even with the "average" player. If its a newbie, I'd go for a full 80-90% handicap, and only use reversals.

Just play your style, above are just some of the ways I play to increase my game :)
