Question: When was the 1st Mortal Kombat tournament?

Well I've heard from the MK animated movie, and I'm sure elsewhere too, that before Shang Tsung entered and corrupted Mortal Kombat, it was a tournament of honour and skill. Kombatants from around the world would enter and it was a noble competition of dignity. BUT I've also heard that Shang's victory was the 1st tournament, as the Elder's wanted a system that was fair - and did not allow total occupation of another realm without winning 10 straight MK's.
BUT in the 1st MK movie, Kitana says: "It was beautiful once, before my fathers best warriors lost 10 straight Mortal Kombats to Outworld..."
-Since she's 10,000 that would mean that it has been around alot longer than Shang's first victory.
So do when do you think Mortal Kombat started, or has it "Always been, and always will be..." as Raiden says in the intro to MKDA?

About Me
"Is it so important that you win one last argument with him?" "No, it is not, but it is true that I will miss the arguments; they were, finally, all that we had."

Mortal Kombat seems to be a symbol of the never-ending conflict between good and evil. Since this conflict is universal, it would make sense that other realms would have knowledge of the tournament and compete in their own version of it. The concept of mortals fighting in the tournament instead of, oh, say... gods or something, would make sense, since mortals are not totally good nor evil, and have a strong abhorrence of being controlled by another.
I think that Raiden was correct when he stated that Mortal Kombat 'always was and ever will be', and that the rules of the tournament were universal, to keep a balance between the realms. Of course, the tournament on Earth and Edenia has been put on hold ever since the third game, so who knows if it'll ever come back?

I suppose it's always been, and will always be (as the war beween Outworld/Edenia that Outworld won, could not have been the first).
However, when the Mortal Kombat tournament was first introduced to Earth, it was a competition of honor and glory as the games said. It's just that Shang Tsung entered, and corrupted it to be like it was in the old days.

Well the Mortal Kombat tournament has been around for awhile, its just as far as the main story was concerned they wanted to tell it when Shang Tsung won the tournament. And who knows if other realms has it, in MKT it gave me the impression that Mortal Kombat was thought up by the Elder Gods when wise men on EARTH had visions that Shao Kahn could possibly take over the Earthrealm. But like I said who knows if other realms has tournaments as well.

Didn't it used to be Shang Tsung corrupted the Shaolin Tournament? In MK2, I think it said he took over the Shaolin Tournament and was using it as the Mortal Kombat tournament to decide who'd win between Earth and Outworld.

As far as I know there are different tournaments for different realms, Earth's is the Shoalin tournament, that Shang Tsung corrupted, and then there's the edenian tournament, that outworld won 10 times in a row as Kitana said, Mortal Kombat wasn't something created on Earth, it has been known throughout all realms, I think.
