Is it possible to fight him in the version of MK1?
Yes. I believe it's the long ass arcade way to trigger the fight though.

I triggered it once. Santa Clause flew in front of the moon, but I don't know how it happened because I just played the game for a couple of hours and couldn't make it happen again.

There's no special tips or tricks to make santaclause appear on the pit stage. But this can happen too when you have an endurance match on the pit.

Every time you play forty matches (they do not have to be consectutive) without turning the game off, it sets a trigger. Then the next time you fight on The Pit, there will be something flying by the moon. Once you get to Reptile or not, the count resets to zero and you have to play another forty matches.
