Smoke in MK2. This is a glitch???

This is a question for Arcade/MAME - Mortal Kombat II

Well, whenever I am fighting in 1 player mode in the portal arena, I start to do uppercuts, one after another. But Toasty never appears in a 1 player game. Is it true?

Because if I am in a 2 player game and start do uppercut again, Toasty appear more often, even 2 times in the battle.

So is it only possible to fight Smoke in VS Mode?
I think its true, yeah, I probably tried it 100 times to get a perfect winning streak in single player mode of MK2 (14 Wins +Jade Win +Smoke Win) but I NEVER got Toasty to appear in the Portal Stage.

You can get him in one player.
But I dont think you can get him during a 1 credit clear.
I have an MK2 Machine and tried it for around 100 times, he does not appear if you dont uses continues.
