I know that many people here dislike MK4, but there are others, like that love the game.
It was my first game in my old Playstation One. When they released that Dreamcast version, I was really happy. I play the game in friend's house, because I did not have money for that console.
It was nice. The graphics were improved, it is like arcade, I think. I never see the original MK4 arcade. The only problem is that the game has a LOT of glitches.
I had hope that they release that game again for PS2. Just fix the bugs and it well done. MK Gold is better than MK4, because it has more characters, arenas, weapons and endings.
Well, the only way now is to play on Chankast emulator. Without sound and voice effects.

Holy crap. MK4 PC was almost as bad as PS1 and no where near as good as the arcade. It was pretty much heinous.
Even when hacked to use the MK Gold models it still looked like crap compared to the arcade.

Mortal Kombat Gold is my favourite MK classic.
The graphics were beautiful, you only had to looks at the fighters and see that. Sound was brilliant and any game where I can put Sonya and Mileena together as a team in battle gets an A+ from me.
(plus Tanya shoved her crotch into peoples faces, whats not to love?)

Really?
But I remember playing Mk4 in the arcade and the graphics were horrible! The shadows were like squares, and whats worst, the FMV endings were in-game graphics with text below and looked terrible. Disgusting.
I might had played an early verion though. You guys could be right.

Arcade MK4's graphics were good for the time. If you have MKM:SZ for the PSX you see arcade MK4 footage in a bonus preview (you can see the same footage in the "Making of MKMSZ" video stickied in this forum) and in that clip is a good representation of the MK4 graphical capabilities. I remember a lot of hype in 97 around the Zeus hardware Midway used, it was pretty decent for its time.
As for MK Gold, well I prefer its graphics to that of the MK4 arcade. It may be due in part to the fact that most of my experience w/ mk4 was the PS version, and only played the arcade a handful of times.
Still though, Gold's graphics are very crisp, from the characters to the backgrounds.
MK4's fighters however, are more realistic, and everything looks 'darker' which isn't a bad thing, cus I think that's the theme they were aiming for. Unfortunately Gold failed to replicate that
Ultimately though, MKGold is most likely not going to be released again. It wasn't an arcade game, so it wont appear in an arcade treasures. The only hope would be if Midway release a "MK Kompilations" game in the future, which may or may not happen.
It is unfortunate, cus it's as close as you're gonna get to playing arcade MK4 at home, unless you own an actual machine (or the emulation gets sorted). With the added characters, the new backgrounds and other MKG specifc features, it is pretty cool, if you were a fan of MK4.
One thing about MKGold that I find, is that it is the best game in franchise history, for being able to play against friends who aren't very good.
With all the others, maybe MK1 and MKSM excluded, if you are decent or even average, and your friends are terrible - there's not much point in playing.
But with MK4/G, they can pick up and play and get it down pretty quickly. And that aspect, coupled with the quick gameplay, improved graphics (compared to PS MK4) and added characters makes MKG a fun game. It's too bad it most likely wont be seen again.
I suggest to anyone who liked MK4, do what I did and go to a video game store that sells older games (not Eb or whatever) and pick up MKG (make sure to get the non-buggy red coloured disc) and a dreamcast to go with it. I picked up MKG, a DC with a couple of controllers and a memory card for like $30 total.
The only drawback is the bloody DC controller...

MK4 Arcade
MK4 N64
MK4 PC

A friend of mine lied to me a few years back about owning a Dreamcast and MKgold but I have forgiven him lol. I think N64/PS graphics are byfar the most shitty out of those three, the pc is second best and is very slick but the arcade is even better and has better graphics due to how many polygons there are. I'm making an mk4 mod using MK4strip and I hope that my hypothisis is correct in that since I have a really good graphics card it's new sounds, graphics and textures will look and sound better than the regular pc version, if you have recorded something and sent it around on a crappy cpu the quality will be crappy, if your graphics card is good so will be your media.
