In the MKII instruction manual, it's described at least twice that the reason Shang Tsung is involved in opening the portal between Outworld and Earthrealm is that he has to "atone for his crimes."
MKII story -
500 years ago, Shang Tsung was banished to the Earth realm for his crimes. With the aid of Goro....
Shao Kahn's bio -
The supreme ruler of the Outworld, Shao Kahn governs the Astral Planes of Shokan and all surrounding kingdoms. Five hundred years ago he banished Shang Tsung into the Earthrealm to pay for his crimes. Shang Tsung was to unbalance the furies and create a weakness in Earth’s dimensional gates. This weakness in the gates would allow Kahn and his minions to forever walk the Earth and plague its inhabitants to a dark and chaotic existance. Only then would Shang Tsung be cleared of his offense and the curse be lifted.
Anyone know what this means? Was it ever revealed?

They never properly used this for mortal kombat storylined it's just a quik thing they came up with.
It is a perfect storyline. You read it wrong. The storyline says nothing about crimes. It simply says he was "banished to the earthrealm". It was an assignment by Shao kahn. He was assigned by shao kahn to win 10 straight MK tournaments with the aid of Goro. He started by winning the first tournament by defeating the Great Kung Lao and failed by losing the 10th tournament to Liu Kang.
Definition of banishment: "to require by authority to leave a country"

I know that, man. That part isn't in the game. It's in the instruction manual.

Which is perfectly canon.
Shang Tsung was banished to Earthrealm because of his failure to win a consecutive MK tournament and unbalance the gates, only with the aid of Goro could they manage to win at least 9 in a row.
This means that Shang Tsung was capable of achieving the impossible until the Great Kung Lao showed up and bested him. Now, when Shang returned andf took control of the tournament they finished the medling shaolin, and won 9 tmies in a row.
OR
Shang Tsung was punished by Kahn and was assigned to compete in MK in his former homeworld in the name of Outworld, and with the aid of Goro. Now if this true, than the 9 consecutive victories incorporated both Shangs defeat and Goros victories.
It seems that Shang must have fell from highest grace if a Mortal kombat competition was a punishment for him.

Probably the former.
and getting banished to the Earth probably meant getting cut off from tons of fringe benefits of being an Outworld soulja....

Sorry, I don't mean to double post but I had one more question. Didn't want to make another thread -
In the MK2 comic, they keep referencing to Shang Tsung being killed at the end of MK1. "Your life no longer exists in the Earth", "Shang Tsung was killed".........
so what was Tsung doing in Outworld? Why was he still alive? And whatnot and such? What kind of "dead" was he?
