It was a fake tournament set up by Shao Kahn to lure the Earth Warriors to their doom so he could take over the Earth Realm I believe...I'm a bit foggy on that.

Yeah, Kahn wanted the earth warriors in Outworld because he was planning his attack on earth. So, Baraka slaughtered Liu Kang's buddies to draw him and his friends in. Sonya and Kano were prisoners to attract Jax and all. As that was happening, they were planning for Sindel's rebirth so they could storm the realm.
