Yeah, you have to unlock them the old school way though, with both of you entering the UKK's for each character like back in the arcades. Kind of an effort, but if you both know your half of the code, then it's worth it.

Or, someone created some Mame cheat thingy that means they're all unlocked from the start. Only thing is both players must have the cheat file I think.

This cheat thingy is the UMK3's NVRAM file with unlocked characters. However, Kaillera disables NVRAM loading at startup, so everyone has the default settings. Probably that's why you don't have Mileena, Ermac and Classic Sub-Zero online. But you can alter the files after loading and then reset the game.

Moe30W made a cheat that allows you to just turn on 3 switches (on both ends of the game meaning both P1 and P2 have the same cheat file, or specifically the set of cheats added to their own, hit tab, go into cheats and enable them all) then P1 hits F3 and resets the game, and the hidden characters are enabled instantly without having to risk desync while enabling them. You have to do this everytime, but it's really easy compared to the normal way.

There is a mame cheat, you have to enable him before every match after you select someone, and then disable him. There is a hack version where you can select H Smoke and Noob on the selection screen in place of Shang and Stryker.
