Controversy creates cash. I vaguely heard about Mortal Kombat because the media was going nuts about the blood and gore, so I had a friend rent it on his Sega Genesis. I saw two guys at a 7-11 going nuts on it before, and it looked fun. We were hooked from then on, and we didn't even know the blood code.

I was about 7 years old when MK1 came out. I didn't have it, know what it was, or even had a game system. But my 11 year old cousin came over with his Sega Genesis and copy of Mortal Kombat. I watched him play it and I never saw anything like it before.
I begged my parents for a Sega and the game after he left. And really, I pretty much only owned MK games until I got a Playstation 1 in 1997. I started expanding my interests with that, but I've always followed the MK series.

I started playing MK since I was seven in the arcade section in the movie theater. The first MK game I played was MK4 and I played it because it looked pretty cool to me at that time.
Sonya was the first character I chose (I was close to choosing Sub-Zero though). I had no idea what was going on when I saw the choose your destiny towers and chose Master II by accident. o_O After a few rounds, I lost and was short of tokens so I couldn't play no longer. When the continue timer reached zero, I freaked out when I saw Sonya implaed on the spikes with "GAME OVER" over the screen.

I only vaguely remember the first time I ever played a Mortal Kombat game. I was on some sort of vacation somewhere with my family at some point in time. I think it was a pizza place, or some other restaurant, or maybe somewhere entirely different. Either way, it had a lagoon theme and the floor was wet. The game was Mortal Kombat 2. Since only people with masks and overall kool looks could interest me at the time, I chose Sub-Zero and lost miserably to Baraka, the bottom of the chain. I think I tried again that same day but I decided that I couldn't simply go with someone that I thought looked kool, I had to pick someone with good moves....so I picked Scorpion. Unfrotunately, I lost just as badly, if not worse, that time. Whether or not this was really my first time playing Mortal Kombat, I'm not sure. All I do know is that this is my earliest memory (Or what I think my earliest one is.) and that I remember more about my fights with Baraka in the Living Forest than I do about the entire vacation. That's right, I even remember the arena in which I fought.
The first game that I seriously played was the dreaded abomination that is Mortal Kombat 4. It was for the Playstation and at the time, I was more influenced by the MK movies than I was the games.
(Shudders.)
After MK 4, I wouldn't see another MK game until my friend told me about Deadly Alliance. I instantly fell in love with that game. Before long I got myself a copy and it was here that I really started being a fan of the series, getting into the story for the first time. My interest in video games since then hasn't spanned too far from Mortal Kombat.
