You have to make each charactor interesting SOMEHOW...despite their personality and/or appearance.

Ever hear someone tell kids that "if they give something to one of them, they have to give it to everyone"? This is basically the same reasoning.

To keep the game fair, and balanced they give most characters some kind of projectile move. Besides, MK characters are usually trained in some form of martial art, and it's a standard gimmick that martial artists can shoot fireballs, ki, magic or what have you.

It's kinda the same way in the Dragonball games. Hercule can't use ki, so they give him a grenade launcher, rocks or grenades. This way he has a ranged attack to keep it fair for him.
