Personally, MK4 to me introduced many characters that were not thought out well to fit the MK story. Quan-Chi to me is the only character that really gave a good depth to MK. I feel that they were just gimmicks and bodies to be mutilated from the likes of sub-zero,scorpion and all the classic characters.

Midway made them put the lame ass charecters in. Originally Tanya was going to be Kitana, Jarek was going to be Kano, and Reiko was going to be Noob Saibot, but Midway wanted brand new charecters, not the same ones again.

If they kept it with Kitana, Kano, and Noob Saibot, the game would have been MUCH better. But, the endings would be different and the whole story with Reiko being Shao Kahn wouldn't exist. MK4 was good, but the new characters just didn't cut it for me. The only good thing about Shinnok was that his death looked pretty cool.

HMM I disagree i thought that the new characters from mk4 were great..especially kai, tanya and reiko..the problem w/ mk4 was the gameplay it was boring stiff and every 1 had the same combo's. besides mk2 the new characters from mk4 were the best and really deserve to be reintroduced.. we already had quan in mkda and he'll probably be in mk6..but now we also have tanya..they'll be liked more in a game w/ better game play..people will start liking all of them in mk6..well the 1's that make it in..

I liked MK4. Even though it didn't have the deepest gameplay or storyline, I thought it was fun.
Most of the new characters in MK4, although some were just created as replacements, had potential to be pretty good, but they were ruined by one thing or another.

Quan Chi was cool. One of my favorites and I'm glad he's still around.

Shinnok seemed like he was going to be cool after all the build up he got in Trilogy and Mythologies but they screwed him over by making him a poor man's Shang Tsung.

Tanya was alright. The only bad thing about her really is that she had a pretty unoriginal look. But she played good and her ending was a pretty good twist. Hopefully she'll redeem herself in Deception.

Jarek had a intriguing story, forced to team with Sonya to fight Shinnok, but he was wasted by them making him almost EXACTLY like Kano.

Fujin and Kai had unique moves, but other than that they had nothing really. Little to no story, and no personality.

I liked Reiko, still do actually. I thought he played good and I thought he was a cool and intriguing character. However, as noob_sareena said, they really screwed him over with the Shao Kahn bullshit they stuck him in. And unfortunatly, no matter how many times it's proven wrong, people still bring it up.

We had some great new characters in MK4, and some terrible ones.

Kai - he seemed stupid, pointless and was probably one of the weakest chars in terms of gameplay. His story and fatalities sucked, but even so I'd like to see him back.

Shinnok - he had everything to be the best boss ever. Great story, awesome look but... he was a Shang's terrible copy! Besides, he was just TOO easy to beat. We were used to have a somewhat difficlt boss (Kahn), but playing against Shinnok was almost practicing.

Reiko - the best character in terms of gameplay, in my opinion. Liked his look, special moves and fatalities... But they simply couldn't have done the Reiko-Shao Kahn thing. I think it's unlikely we'll see him again, what is a shame.

Jarek - this guy was a Kano copy, everyone knows. That's why nobody likes him. He doesn't even have an original story. And the worst thing is that his fatalities were exactly the same of Kano's. But he looked ok.

Tanya - they could have developed her story, but she was one of the fastest chars of the game. Liked her look... liked her special moves... terrible fatalities. But happy to see her back.

Fujin - hm... Don't understand why people don't like him. He had a good look, story, special moves, not-so good fatalities. I'd like to see him in Raiden's place for at least one game.

Quan Chi - The coolest character of the game! He was evil, had the best fatality of every single MK, looked very nice, had great special moves and mainly, he had a really awesome story. We'll probably be seeing this guy for a long time.

MK4 to me just seemed to kiddish compared to the 2-d games that looked real and had sick fatalitys.MK4 just lacked in everything and the graphics where ugly as hell that game seems more outdated then mk2-mkt.I mean just look at the mk4 screenshots its vile.

Shinnok: Build them up, and then knock them down, I suppose. He was made to look like a powerful anti-god character in Mythologies, but he got neutered in MK4. The only thing vaguely original with him was his story. Even his fatalities were semi-ripped off from other characters (Scorpion's Hell Hand, anyone?). An easy poor-man's Shang Tsung, minus any original moves. Stay in Hell, bizzatch!

Tanya: Stereotypical bad-girl. She resembled Mileena more than Kitana, with her various physical special moves, looked plain, and had a story that was lackluster at best. I actually liked her Neck Twister fatal, but her other one just sucked. Midway better have a good reason for bringing her back for Deception...

Jarek: The Kano Clone, everyone. Point and mock at your pleasure. EVERYTHING about him is copied from our favorite Black Dragon member: his moves, his fatalities, even his storyline and look, which both resembled Kano's to some extent. It's a good think that he's locked up in the Prison in Deception. I'm sure there are a LOT of people just itching to take him out, but good.

Reiko: Probably the best out of the group, as far as fighting goes. However, that doesn't change the fact that he's just a replacement for Noob Saibot. His moves were inspired by the ebony ninja (especilly his teleport slam), his fatalities were lame, and his story was all but non-existent. Plus, they completely bent him over and screwed him royally up the ass with the Reiko/Shao Khan theory they put in his ending. They are NOT the same character people, so just give it up. And Midway? I hope you fix up this debacle you created soon, lest you have a legion of feral n00bs after you, trying to learn the truth about him...

Fujin: Last, but not least, the God of Wind. He is, by far, the most original and most developed new character out of the bunch. Some people would say his look and story are dumb, but to me, they make sense. He helped guard the Amulet that Quan Chi stole, and he's helping Raiden finish what they had started so long ago. His moves were also creative, though a little reminiscent of Kung Lao's (especially with the Air Kick and Tornado Spin). His fatals were a little lame, but I though his Windsheer Skinner one to be the most logical, and it was well done, too. If anyone needed to come back, it was him.

Quan Chi: The new face of evil. His moves kicked ass, his look kicked ass, his fatalities kicked ass...hell, everything about him kicked ass! He was the best bad guy to come around since Shao Khan, so it's no wonder why Midway brought him back for another go-around. He was fresh, he was original, and he was EVIL, something that most other villianous characters in the game never quite achieved.

Shinnok: Great potential and an awesome character. He was bad ass in MK:M, but ruined in MK4. He was a total Shang Tsung and a horrible boss.
Quan Chi: One of the most bad ass villians ever. He was a great addition to MK4, his moves and story are great. His rivalry with Scorpion makes him even more liked.
Fujin: He has so much potential that its not even funny. God of wind and protector of earth......he pretty much plays a huge role now. His story was great and i loved his fatalities.
Kai: Even though hes boring, i find him pretty original. I dont really care for him though, hes just a character that i dont mind.
Tanya: Awful. She was one of the worst characters ever introduced in MK4 IMO. Shes horrible, and even though she was Top Tier, i found her story to be boring and useless. They shouldve just went with Kitana.
Jarek: Another worthless character. Total Kano clone, even though his story is somewhat intriguing.
Reiko: IMO this is the most ridiculous character to ever exsist in MK. Not only is his story BS, but his looks as well. He became even more hated with the whole Reiko/Kahn issue. Jeebus, i hope he never returns in MK again or gets a mention. Hes horrible.

I think they started to introduce bad characters in mk3. Sheeva for example.

The only new character in MK4 I really hated was Kai. He had lame moves, especially the generic fireball, not so great story, and even lamer fatality's.

All in all, I liked the fatality's more than anything else about MK4.

Not gonna comment about Shinnok, I think everybody agrees on his cheesiness.

I think that the bad and impopular characters were introduced in MK3, a few of the new characters were popular.

In MK4 the new characters were ok, but boring... it is like if the MK team had their lesson with MK3 and they decide to put not too shocking new characters in the game(à la Sheeva or Stryker).

Quan Chi was introduced in MK4 and he is my favorite character, I do like Fujin, Tanya and Reiko as well, the other characters would need just a little bit of work to be interesting(at the exception of Jarek, there is nothing to do with him anymore)

I agree, bad characters were really introduced in MK3. I thought Nightwolf and Stryker were absolutely horrible character-wise. Sheeva was pretty stupid, Shang Tsung looked terrible, and Liu Kang was still there, which I felt unfortunate because I've always hated him :)

However, MK4, I believe, introduced unfun characters. There were tons of characters in MK4 that were just boring and pointless to play as. In MK3, I thought it funny that while there were some very stupid new characters, the stupidest (Stryker and Nightwolf) turned out to be some of the most fun to use.
