Why did Midway decide to kill off the original Sub-Zero (Bi-Han)?

Why did Midway decided to kill off the original Sub-Zero (Bi_Han) and replace him with his younger brother Kuai Liang?

Because Scorpion's story had to move forward. Tobias didn't intend him to be constantly stuck in a loop of wanting revenge and never getting it like Boon and Vogel apparently do.
But they couldn't leave Sub out of the sequel, he was one of the most popular characters...so why not have the name be a title that passes on to another guy?

It also made for a hell of a swerve in both Scorp's and Sub's MKII endings.
