What is the reason that made MK as good as it is today? Was it the characters, violence, story, gameplay, graphics?

the fact that every new games add a new element to the franchise.
all the MK games are different and unique and this is what kept me interested

I think the blood and violence brought people in. Gameplay and good graphics kept them playing. And the storyline and characters made them keep coming back.

As was said, initial shock appeal, then good graphics and eventually they got to good gameplay. The gameplay of MK3 (and eventually UMK3 and MKT) is what really sucked me into it and is the main reason why I stayed interested.
I also thought the storyline was unique. It was much grander and more fluid then most other fighting games. There were overarching schemes with smaller stories intertwined and it was done extremely well. I still have yet to find a fighting game with as good a story.

The good graphics with the digitized actors was a big part. But I think it was the blood that did it. MK2 was more famous because of bloodier, goreier fatalities. To me, MK wasn't all that great until MK3, with the combos. That's what made me like MK.

For me, the mythology and storyline for the series kept me a fan. It was so much deeper and more thought out than most fighting games (Bloody Roar and Soul Calibur being the exceptions, imo). Most fighting games out there followed the same ol' "tournament to see who's the best" storyline, and that gets severely old, after a while. With Mortal Kombat, you get the feeling of responsibility and depth when playing it. It wasn't "You lose, and you're out of the tournament". It was "You lose, and you die, your soul is stolen, and your world is destroyed by a madman from another dimension". You have a real sense of consequence if you lose, instead of the "Oops, sorry, you're knocked to the bottom rung of the tournament, again" feeling of other fighting games.

What I love most about MK are the characters and the overall feel, the atmosphere of the universe. At first glance, it was the gore and blood that attracked me. Then when I played and learned about the charcters, the way they lived, there family's, there accomplishment and failures, they seemed to become real.
Even the tournament it's self had history. At first it's just a tournament nothing more nothing less, then we learn it was something much more important. My mind was blown when I learned it's history dated back centuries then, eventually, Millenia. I know I was a young kid with an over active imagination but through the years I feel as if I've gotten to know the characters and feel what they feel. Just think...how do you thing Mavado would feel when he turns a corner to see Kabal stand in front of him? How would Kabal feel? Those are the question that I think about and what make MK s great.
