I remembered that the champion of Mortal Kombat cannot be killed outside of Mortal Kombat, Which is probably why Liu Kang is back, Because Shang Tsung and Quan Chi killed him outside of the tournament. The champion is immortal!
And what about Shao Kahn? He competed and won Mortal Kombat and killed King Jarrod in order to invade Edenia, And Shao Kahn hasn't participated in a tournament since that we know of... Which means that he's still technically champion and cannot be killed outside of Mortal Kombat. And he never defended the title against Liu Kang from what i can tell, So by some odd twist they're both technically the champions.
He was "Killed" outside of Mortal Kombat like Liu Kang, Which is why he's not dead.
...Or am i mistaken somehow?

I believe i heard about it in the Animated Mortal Kombat movie, I can't remember the name of it. But it was released in stores as an hour long prelude to the actual movie.
(p.s. i like this ermac avatar, thanks for making it for everyone bezou)

Remember the movies, tv shows, etc are not canon...unless I'm mistaken only the storyline in the game is...
Anyways, there seems to be some confusion as to which type of immortality the MK Champion gets..I personally believe it is the ageless version rather than the 'can-not-be-killed-no-matter-what' version.

Lady Raiden is right about Liu Kang's immortality. the only explanation for his return is the destruction of the one who took his soul, thus being set free.
And they never said Kahn competed in an MK tournament. Either the tournament in Edenia was won by one of Kahn's warriors and Kahn stormed the realm and killed Jerrod because he resisted. Or Kahn came across Edenia unexpectedly and decided to Conquer it, killing everyone who apposed him

Taken from Liu Kang's MK4 bio:
"Still the immortal champion of Mortal Kombat, Liu Kang finds himself venturing into the realm of Edenia to rescue the princess Kitana from the vile clutches of Quan Chi. Unsuccessful in his mission, Liu returns to Earth and mounts an effort to bring together Earths greatest warriors. He does it this time not only to free Kitana's home world but also to asist his mentor and Earth's protector- Rayden"
He is in fact immortal.

I have that movie, its called Mortal Kombat The Animated Movie: The Journey Begins. And in it it does say that the champion of Mortal Kombat is immortal outside of the tournament, so that is possible.
But I think that Shao Kahn did lose in Mortal Kombat II, cus he hosted the tournament and lost to Liu Kang.

The first part is right if you believe the 1st movie, cus Kitana says something like, it was beautiful once, before my father's best fighthers lost 10 straight Mortal Kombat's to Outworld's demon warriors." (Not sure if that's right, tryin from memory) I know the movies aren't supposed to be part of the games storyline, but I think it's safe to say that Edenia lost 10 MK's to Outworld.
Though I did heard somewhere that Edenia was conquered before the laws of Mortal Kombat had been invented...

Thanks for the confirmation krsx66.
I'm however not entirely sure about Kahn, I could have sworn that he competed against Edenia and killed King Jarrod.

Well, only another immortal can kill an immortal.
Shang Tsung is a DEMON sorcerer.
Liu Kang is the IMMORTAL champion.
Sorcerers and deities seem to be on the same page, and only SPECIAL humans can be immortal.. Only an immortal can kill an immortal.
This could explain Liu Kang's death at the hands of Shang Tsung.
and why Fujin didn't die when the older Sub-Zero beat him up.
Get me?

Shang Tsung isn't immortal, He just found that sucking souls makes you suprisingly young.

I think the guy who had said that Liu Kang returned because he the rules stated he couldnt die outside of Mortal Kombat is the one that makes the most sense. It's a really good reason to bring him back and plus it is known he is the immortal champion of Mortal Kombat as stated in his MK4 bio.

Tazz? Shao Kahn is an immortal the same way as Raiden is. Kahn cannot be killed by a mortal. But powerful beings like Raiden or the Elder Gods can surely kill the Emperor. And Kahn was defeated by not only Liu Kang but all the Earth realm warriors together. Shao Kahn was never a champion in an MK.
Liu Kang is ageless. that's what they mean by him being immortal.

Also, when Liu Kang defeated Shao Kahn. That wasn't a real tournament. Shang Tsung lured all of the Earth warriors who beat him on Earth into the Outworld in a false tournament to get them all killed. Liu Kang fought Shao Kahn for the first time in a false tournament so that's sorta considered like an exhibition match. Every official Mortal Kombat is held during every new generation. I think we will be seeing Liu Kang alot untill he gets defeated in an Official Mortal Kombat tournament, or if he forfeits the title...

Hey, Shang Tsung is always described as a DEMON sorcerer, therefore meaning he's immortal.
Plus you saw that GamePro pic! He's not even really human.

They can call him the fairy king, But i've never heard of him being refered to as a demon.

Shang being a Demon sorcerer has nothing to do with him being immortal. The key to his immortality is that he needs fresh souls to keep his youth and to live longer.
| BigCen Wrote: I always thought Goro was the champion who Liu Kang beat to become champion. Shang Tsung hosted the first MK but Goro was the champion. |
No Shang Tsung was champion long before that, Shang Tsung had fought in a previous tournament and had won it, he held the title for a long time untill the Original Kung Lao came and defeated him. That's when Shang Tsung became an old man and seeked Goro to help him out. Together they dominated Mortal Kombat once again and Goro became the next champion after he killed Kung Lao and won the title.
