If it wasn't for the fact that they've mentioned a subboss I'd agree that no subboss at all is possible.

After all, there's precedent for it. The arcade version of MK4 has no subboss.

Yeah, but MK4 is a bad example for pretty much everything (how to have an end boss, how to make new characters, how to have good endings, etc.)
