This is an email I recieved from someone at midway regarding the hideous connection problems I was having (still havent fixed it yet though).
I'm one of the programmers who worked on MKD's online play and I was
forwarded the following e-mail by our customer service people.
What is the connection that you are feeding into your router? If it is
from a University LAN then even though you have a router your connection
will still have to go through the University's firewall to get to the
outside world. Your router will allow you to set up your own
sub-network of devices that can talk to each other without going through
the University's firewall but it won't let you bypass the University
firewall to talk to the outside world.
If you are using a LAN connection you will need to make a request to the
University's IT department that they open up the required ports for MK
Deception for you on their router.
