I have people swearing to me that Shazam isn't real and that his name is Captain Marvel. But someone said Shazam was some old wizard dude. But if DC worked on this game, clearly at one point his name was Shazam. I'm not a comic guy so I'm very confused on this character. What's the real scoop please. Please dum it down for a non-comic follower. No idea who these guys are.

Thanks!

well, his official "Hero" name is Captain Marvel, however, in order to turn into Captain Marvel he must say SHAZAM!!! which is where that comes from

in other words

Captain Marvel = Name
Shazam = Catchphrase of C.M.

Ok, here's the rundown:

1) His name is Captain Marvel.

2) Shazam is the name of the wizard his powers come from.

3) "Shazam!" is also the signature catch phrase he shouts to transform from Billy Batson into Captain Marvel.

4) Captain Marvel was created by Fawcett Comics back in 1939 (about a year after Superman).

5) DC sued the pants of of Fawcett because of the similarity to Superman and I think won.

6) DC obtained Captain Marvel.

G) DC effectively stopped using the character for a while and lost the trademark.

H) Marvel Comics came to be.

9) Marvel trademarked the name "Captain Marvel" for their own character Mar-Vell.

16) DC got mad.

R) Marvel said "nya nya."

%) Though DC can call its character "Captain Marvel" in the comics and elsewhere, Marvel's trademark on the name prevents DC from using it as a headline or advertisement. Hence "Shazam!" is used instead on comic covers and in ad campaigns.
