Can we really accept 'joke' characters as part of the MK universe?

posted05/04/2004 08:27 PM (UTC)byMK:D sounds very kool to me so far, but I'm not sure about the return of Ermac and Noob Saibot.
Sure, they're kool fighters, but the fact is they were
originally created as a joke, or have joke names,
and even though the developers are now turning
them into 'serious' characters, I still can't take them
seriously, or accept them as 'proper' fighters.
-They also rip off moves from classic fighters, which
is just plain wrong!!!
I also regard Bo Rai Cho as a joke, as he farts and
throws up all the time which is pretty dumb, no?
Anyone share my views or want to complain them?
Are we happy to see Bo, Ermac and Noob back
for DECEPTION?

well i suppose some joke characters are cooler than others. meat and mokap were shit but noob somehow got a following. i think mostly its because they start off as secret characters and being really quick gives them a coolness factor. noob and ermac look very different and serious in mkd so i am willing to give them a chance.
i hoped i wasnt going to see bo rai cho again but we'll just see what theyve done to improve him.
imagine if mokap was unplayable in mkda and 2x faster than the other characters? i reckon there ould be a bit of a following form him despite his dork factor.

I'm happy with their return.
Ermac has a cool story. He is a bunch of souls put into human form.Noob Saibot is also really cool.He had unique moves and a pretty cool story.I'm also glad with Bo Rai Cho's return.I've always wanted to know who trained Liu Kang and his moves were ok.

Jeez, forgot about Mokap. Now that REALLY IS
a joke character, let's hope we don't see him again.

Characters like Mokap and meat are awful IMO. Even though noob and ermac were intended to be joke characters, they are now becoming more serious characters who are involved with the story. Noob saibot has played a decent role by siding with shinnok in the past and killing goro. His character is now more important than ever. Ermac has taught kenshi the teleknetic slam, and will probably become his mentor. Both noob and ermac are great characters that have there own unique looks and moves. I am very glad of there return.
I was hoping characters like bo rai cho wouldnt return, IMO hes an awful character. I also didnt really want liu kang to return, but if his story has different twists, then i'll be somewhat cool with him.

stop moaning, dude!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ermac and Noob are definitely NOT joke characters anymore. i didn't even know they were in the first place. both may be mysterious but it doesnt mean they are jokes. Ermac and Noob are my fave characters, mainly Ermac. so stop moaning about them, o.k????!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although Ermac and Noob were jokes, they've since come into their own with their own moves and stories.
I credit Noob's story importance because it led into MK4. It was the first mention of the Netherealm and Shinnok.
However, I don't see Meat, Mokap, and Chameleon becoming offical characters any time soon, mainly because they were all very poorly recieved from fans. People at least like Noob and Ermac.
Khameleon on the other hand, still has a chance, I think since she had an intriguing story. She just needs her own moves and appearence.
Another one character I consider to be a joke that should be ignored is the "Classic" Sub-Zero who appeared in UMK3 and some versions of MKT. He was never confirmed to be the original Sub-Zero and we never had a followup on his ending. The N64 MKT just combined him with the current Sub-Zero. I think at this point it's been retconned that he never existed so I don't think anyone should really bother trying to explain what his deal was.

Woaahh! Peace man, I'm not really moaning about
these guys, and I'm happy that they're now being
made to be more unique, but honestly,
NOOB SAIBOT - The name just aint kool In my
twisted opinion...
Okay I have never heard anyone say a bad word about
Ermac or Noob, and was just wondering what you
guys thought about them.
-Peace dudes,
-Peace to all Noob and Ermac lovers,
-And peace to the world.
(Now how do I do that fatality? The one where I rip off
Noob's head and pull out the spine?......Ah yes....)
Noob and Erm are classic Han Solo like characters, mere support acts that ended up with their own limelight and following, y'know?
Joke is subjective I guess. When I first saw Kabal in MK3, I did in fact LOL. He looked so goofy with that tin funnel mask and stringy mullet. I'm seriously curious to see if they've rectified his goofiness in MKD. If not, then I guess yes, joke characters can be part of the MKU.

I never took characters like Noob and Ermac as "joke" characters. I just looked at them as hidden characters to find and fight against. I never took them seriously as infringing upon the MK universe. Same goes for Rain for that matter. Now Meat, Blaze, and Mokap on the other hand I just thought were silly. I like the idea however that the creators have a tendancy to put rumor to fact. Everyone thought that there was a way to fight "that guy on fire" in MK2. Same goes for Ermac. I don't like taking these characters seriously though. Even though Noob and Ermac have really cool new looks, I still consider them to be hidden characters. I don't mind finding them and playing as them, but making them an integral part of the storyline just seems odd to me.
I'm not whining, and I'm okay with seeing Noob and Ermac on the character select screen, but I would've preferred to see them in hidden spots, like where Blaze and Mokap were in the last game. Cool hidden characters makes for a better game somewhat IMO more so than having guys that used to be hidden be on the select screen and then having some other lame Mokap character be hidden.
Again tho, just my opinion.

Maybe Rain will be the hidden ninja in MKD.

Joke characters are basically taken that way based on how you perceive them. Mokap I see as a joke, but Ermac, Noob and Blaze I don't.
You can get cool joke characters. It all depends on the way they play and what type of story they have. And also it'll depend on their look too. If they look stupid or have a rubbish story people are bound to hate them. Obviously Noob and Ermac don't as they have plenty of fans.

Would I be considered a racist if I were to say that
Noob Saibot is just way too black?
Well, I'll forgive Noob this time because he isn't as
ridiculously dark as in the older games.
He is more than 1 shade of black!
Must admit that Ermac's looking cool.
(mental note: do not attack Noob or Ermac as it causes
controversy and angers many a fan)

I don't have a problem with how those characters were created. I liked how ermac was formed. As long as their storylines are cool i don't think there's a problem with them at all. They have a huge fan base and that's the important thing as well as gameplay.
I don't particularly like Noob myself, but not because he's a 'joke' as you say, but because I've only seen him in a playable way once and i wasn't impressed. But that's just my opinion.
The only thing i see as a 'joke' in the MK universe are the way some characters get their name.
Smoke for example. He's got the name because smoke comes off his body. What is he somehow lost this smoke effect?!? The name wouldn't suit! It's just silly.
Frost is another silly name. If any other Lin Kuei members join will they be Ice, Mist, Fridge or Freezer!? I sure hope not!
Reptile is a silly name. It's too generic because he is a reptile!

Yeah, but you really can't beat NOOB SAIBOT for
a ridiculous name.

I like Noob's name. It's creative!
Those newcomers to the MK series, and by that I mean those that have never seen Noob before probably won't even know where his name come from when they buy this game. They will have no idea that it was created from the developer's own name. They won't even think twice as to where the name come from.
Whereas as smoke, reptile and others are just plain obvious and lame.

True...
assumed conversation regarding Reptile and Smoke's creation,
ED: OK, We've got this fighter, and he is a reptile.
What shall we call him?
JOHN: Uuhh... Reptile.
ED: Kool. Done.
JOHN: Right, now what about the other ninja that
emits continueos clouds of smoke?
ED: Uuhh...

Bo Rai Cho is really dumb, and his moves make the game seem silly, kind of like Drahmin throwing a ball of flies. As far as Mokap, I never took the time to unlock him; could someone describe him to me?
I'll start by saying that Bo Rai Cho wasn't intended to be a joke character in the classical sense of the word. He's a good character IMO who just happens to have some serious flaws. He doesn't deserve the flak he gets.
Ermac wasn't really a joke either, just a sort of glitch-turned-travesty. When he fist showed up, I was confused (very lackluster story in UMK3, he qas around just to prove he exists? Huh?) However, MKT gave him an intersting storyline, and he was given a brief nod im MK:DA. He hasn't had too much exposure, but he's looking interesting from my point of view. We'll see.
It's Noob Saibot that I've had a major beef with for a long time, though. Let's look at his history.
MKII: Secret character. No story.
MKIII: Secret character. No story.
UMK3 (arcade): Secret character. No story.
2 games and one revision, and we still don't know a damn thing about him.
MKT: We're finally informed he's been working for Shinnok all this time, and recieves orders to side with Kahn. Ok, good.
MK4-MKG: Secret character. No ending or storyline of his own, we're just supposed to presume he's still working for Shinnok.
MKTE: Apparently now woking for Kahn, kills Goro.
For so long, the man didn't have a brain cell of his own, and presumably still doesn't. It appears that he's got no motivation save for serving his master, whoever that may be at the time. He had barely any stroyline development whatsoever, up until he killed Goro. That's a major thing, and he's staring to capture my interest. But just barely. I personally think Noob's the most overrated character in the MK universe, having done little to merit his popularity. I really, really hope MKD changes that, which it looks like it will. If it doesn't, I'll just start hating him outright. Sorry, Noob fans. but on the positive side, I think "Noob Saibot" sounds like a deadly, wickedly serious name.
Koke characters like Mokap and Meat, I consider cute little extras, which are to be paid no more attention than a Kombat Kode that disables throwing. That's all.
It's the fact that they made a joke character by the name of Rain, and tried to give him a real storyline, that gets me. Ugh.

No we should not. This is mortal Kombat. This is death and bloodshed.Stupid characters shouldn't be anywhere near this game.It breaks the pace of the carnage. I mean look at Mk2. It was widely regarded as the best Mortal kombat game. But there were a number of reasons why.It knew who it was. They didn't screw around with stupid characters. Even tho a lot of people were put off by the friendships and babalities. It was about bloody good fighting and mass murder. The stages were dark and grim reflecting the madness. It was sweet indeed. I am glad that Jax isn't coming back. After the game developers butchered his charcter in DA I hope I never see him again. They just need to keep the blood flowing with great characters and dump the idiots.

Well if you mean noob an some of the others yes.But if you mean always put a joke figure in MK then I dont like it but I bet they will for a little humor like always.Long Live Johnny Cage.

I'm a noob fan. I think it's been too long since we last saw noob. Ermac I'm not too fussed about. But I wouldn't like to see Bo'Rai Cho back. He was the most useless character in Mk:Da imo.

You make some good points about Noob.
One of the things I like about Noob Saibot is that he was so obviously a joke character, from his name to his appearence, but they gave made him a real character. I don't know why, but that really appealed to me.
When I saw him in UMK3 I was like "This I gotta see." Sure enough, I thought he was bad ass in UMK3 and MKT. And in MKT he finally got a storyline that had relevence to the overall plot.
You see Noob as a brainless servant and that is possible. I see him as a silent mercenary, Boba Fett-type of character. He never speaks he's just ruthless and efficient at his job and works for whoever he wants.
But at this point our interpretations of how he really acts is only speculation.
0
Well it depends on the character design.Noob and Ermac both look good and have great stories, but Mokap doesn't.I just pray that the MK team never add Zebron to the game.

Hmm, I don't mind at all that Noob n Ermac are selectable on the char. screen. Just think how much cooler the hidden chars. could be (yes I realize I'm goin out on a limb here).
It seems the MK team is really trying to please the fans this time around so I think we need to just let em do their thing. As for Bo Rai Cho, lol, I never really thought he was more than a filler so to speak. But, like I said, I'm sure the MK team will right his previous wrongs, feel me?
Mokap n meat are just retards and blaze needs to jump over a bridge or sumthin. I don't think they should put any joke chars. in this game at all but they should include humor, like the the toasty guy n stuff.
