It's been rumored, some say confirmed, that Sareena will be in MK:Deception. However, her allignment is in the air so I'm asking what would you prefer her to do and why?
I think she should be good and not evil and I'll explain why.

But first, some people still don't even know who Sareena is so this is all we know about her:
Sareena is a demon from the Netherealm who first appeared in MK:Mythologies. She was one of Quan Chi's assassins, along with Kia and Jataaka, but she helped the original Sub-Zero defeat him because she wanted him to help her escape the Netherealm. Her exact words were "I've waited an eternity to escape." She was then shot in the back by Shinnok and believed to have been killed.
In MK:Tournament Edition it was revealed that Sareena wasn't killed, but her human form was destroyed. Her essence was banished to the 5th Plane of the Netherealm as punishment for helping Sub-Zero. However, she discovered the portal Scorpion and Quan Chi used in Deadly Alliance and escaped into Outworld where she later found a way to regain her human form without Quan Chi's magic.
After her escape she apparently meets up with the current Sub-Zero and he offered to let her stay with the Lin Kuei in return for her helping his brother against Quan Chi. However, her ending suggests that "trusting a demon from the Netherealm does not come without risk."

Now, I personally think Sareena should be a good or at the very least neutral, because I think she'd be much more interesting and original good rather than evil. I'm not saying that Sareena couldn't work as a bad guy, but my concern is that they'll just waste her potential.

Say she turns evil. Why and what for?
"Oh she wants to take over the world and she'll do whatever she has to to do it." Pretty much like Mileena.
"She wants to steal Sub-Zero's medallion and gain it's power." Pretty much like Frost.
Beyond that what has she got to offer as an evil character? Some people say she could team with Frost and they'll plot against Sub-Zero; pretty much like Sub-Zero's dozen other enemies.
Right now Sub-Zero's enemies include Sektor, Mavado, the Dragon King, possibly Frost, and now Baraka and his entire race. What's Sareena got to offer that they can't? She could probably seduce him, but I'd like her to have a story that won't be resolved in one game.

And it's not like Sub-Zero considers her to be a friend and he'll be reluctant to kill her, like he would Frost. All Sub-Zero knows about Sareena is what his brother told him which is probably little more than "When I was in the Netherealm this chick helped be beat Quan Chi, but she was killed, which sucked because she was hot." Sub-Zero has no attachment to Sareena. Her turning on him won't have any effect on him. He doesn't know her.

Why would Sareena even want to turn on Sub-Zero anyway? His brother spared her life and probably would have helped her escape the Netherealm. She has no grudge against them.
She could form an army of Demons and try to take over the world. Isn't this what some have suggested Nitara should do? Or why wouldn't Drahmin unite the Demons and attack.

Then there's Ashrah, the Demon Huntress. An interesting fued with good potential, however say Sareena's evil, what have we got? The noble Demon Huntress trying to kill the escaped evil Demon. Good guy chasing around the bad guy. Wow, that's new.

On a side note, why is it every single bad guy has to try to conquer the world? What the hell could Sareena want with the Earth? When I see Sareena, I don't see a Dr. Doom-like character who yells "First Outworld, then the WORLD!"

Or maybe she's just nuts. She's a crazy Demon who likes to kill people for little to no reason or specific purpose. While this may be somewhat original, I don't see this story carrying on for more than one game, and I'd rather not see Sareena written off as a "filler."

As I said, it's not that I don't think Sareena would be interesting or unique as a bad guy, it's just that I don't see it. I've asked this before, if anyone can think of something really cool or original Sareena could do or offer as an evil character then I'd love to hear it.


Now, I think if she was good or at least neutral:
For starters, she apparently hated the Netherealm and Quan Chi enough that she was willing to risk her life to get out. Sounds like the action of a somewhat good guy.
First question would be "If she's a demon why would she be good?" Exactly. Why would a soulless demon from the Netherealm turn good or try to turn good? That right there is a story. Was she born a human but she was turned into a demon? Maybe something happened to her that made her want to stop being a demon?

Why would she want to turn good? What does she want? She's excaped the Netherealm so what would she be after next? In MK:TE, it says her essence is sent to the 5th Plane, not her soul. So I say she wants a soul. She wants to be human. How could she accomplish this? Well, offering to help Sub-Zero, who just happens to be allies with the resident GOD Raiden, may be a good start.

However, there are several conflicts she could encounter along the way. For one, who in their right mind's going to trust a hellspawned Demon? Everyone expects her to betray them and be evil. It probably doesn't help that she has a Demonic instinct and bloodlust. She doesn't want to go apeshit and kill people, but it's sometimes hard to control herself. Think Wolverine from X-Men trying to control his berserker rages. So her first conflicts would be controling herself and earning the trust of others.

There's also Quan Chi. She betrayed Quan Chi in Mythologies. I highly doubt he'd just forgive and forget. He could send people to try to kill her. Guess what, that gives Kia and/or Jataaka a reason to return. And I doubt Sareena has any love for Quan Chi. She'd probably want to kill him too. Potential alliance with Scorpion right there.

Then there's Frost. Apparently, Frost wants to steal Sub-Zero's Medallion. Suppose Sareena finds out and tries to stop her; but who will Sub-Zero believe: his pupil Frost or a soulles Demon he barely knows? Now Sareena needs to somehow proove Frost is bad news and stop her.

Now Ashrah. Sareena may be a Demon, but she just wants a soul and doesn't mean to cause trouble. Will Ashrah believe her? Probably not. To Ashrah, that's probably what all Demons say. So we have Ashrah, a good guy who thinks she's doing the right thing trying to kill Sareena who is a misunderstood Demon trying to better herself.

Say down the line, Sareena manages to earn the trust of Sub-Zero and the other Earth warriors, but she still has not found a way to get a soul. Then say a bad guy offers to give her a soul if she agrees to serve him. What will win out: Sareena's quest for a soul, or her loyalty to her newfound allies?
These are storylines that could carry on for the next 4 or 5 games.

And that's just stuff that comes immediatly. New storylines could come up as Sareena's character evolves.


So to sum up: I think Sareena has much more potential to be interesting and original as a good character than an evil one. As a good guy, she has the potential to have one of the best storylines and be one of the deepest characters. As a bad guy, she's just a typical bad girl cliche. Bad girls are fine, but we already have plenty who can do that act better.
However, if anyone can think of something better that Sareena could do evil, that would be more interesting or original than her being good, I'm more than willing to hear it.
