Nice one! Anyway dude, you are wrong about one thing. You cannot read a PS2, or X-Box, or any game disc without the proper software. It does not matter if you are a CPU Programmer, because I am. I have my Masters Degree in it, and believe me, I have tried reading the disc with every possible software from C++ Visual all the way to normal DOS language and nothing. Trust me kid, there is no way to read a game disc without the proper software/language. That is one way they keep secrets away from gamers. About your friend who works somewhere for some game company, I am not going to say you are a liar there, because he/she could! However, that does not mean they have total access to every hidden game secret out there for every game. Including new games. Even if they worked for Midway, I know for a fact they do not get free access to the cheat codes. They must call in to the 900 number like everyone else. They check you for paper, and pens before you enter the department that takes care of that, this I know. As far as MKD having only 24 playable fighters, it might, it might not, we don't know, but as for your friends, they are liars, or you are.
Oh god here we go again. Everytime I come on the internet someone is saying that either are a rocket scientist or that has a PHD in computer engineering. You are a newb, now go kill yourself.

Wow, its not all about the SU and secrets and shit. I think Ed Boon's team did a great job in this game. Come on, you get 24 characters, konquest mode, chess kombat, and puzzle kombat. Not to mention that you can play online for the first time for a fighting game. With online play you can go online and meet new friends. I think that that was a good idea. Quit your whinning. If you want to whine, go back to fucking kindergarden.

Really they are both newb's,as in a new member.A n00b is pretty much a really stupid person.Possibly new,you could have 10,000 visits and be a n00b.
The maker of this thread,is acting n00bish.Complaining about something small,and calling MKD a dissapointment because of it.
TheRealGanondorf (I think) is just a new member.He hasnt done anything wrong yet,not that I have seen at least.From what I have seen,he has pretty much earned my respect.EDIT:Nevermind,misunderstanding.It appears you are the one acting like an ass.
To Keo:Previous statement retracted,misunderstanding.Whoever read that,simple misunderstanding it has been removed.

Here's a bit more food for thought.. This is the ps2 version of the game..

Are you starting to under stand why you can't run a game build for a different architect let alone OS won't run under your i386 windows comp?

You can't just tell it to read anything.. Both xbox and ps2 use very specific copy protection. For instance, there needs to be this many sectors on the disc that hold boot sector, and then they usually have gaps in them and everything. A gap is just what it is called, a gap in the cd usually between sessions. If you've followed this stuff long enough, you'd know that you can create a bootable dreamcast cd if it has starting track of 3 seconds i think (thats redbook standard), and then a gap, and then the actual game data.
As for it not running on your pc, and stuff from your pc not running on it. I'm _pretty_ sure ps2 uses a stripped down form of unix, eventhough I've never been able to determine if thats true or not. And it's probably safe to assume that xbox uses a stripped down version of windows. What does this have to do with anything you ask? In both cases, neither console has a HAL (hardware abstration layer). A HAL is used in operating system to make life easier on application/game programmers. They use one standard api for instance to play a sound, instead of having to code it for every sound card that's out there like they had to do in the dos games. Remember how in duke nuke 'em you had to select your sound card and set your irq and everything? Well a HAL kills that level of involvement in applications and games.
On the consoles however, theres no need for a HAL since all of the components are the same in each system. And I know you're probably thinking, but my xbox has a different dvd-rom then my friends. Yeah, that can happen. The dvd-rom is controlled of the IDE interface which is a very basic hardware that uses the same protocols reguardless of the driver. Video cards and sound cards are completely different though. In the PC world, a video card may or may not have 3d acceleration, could have 8mb of video ram or 256mb. Thats not the case in ps2 and xbox. The hardware thats in there will always be in there, theres no way to upgrade it (this isn't talking about hard drives). Since theres no way for it to change, either by swapping cards or upgrading, using a HAL is just a waste of time in writing it, and a waste of resources (CPU time, RAM, etc..).
As I mentioned above with the operating systems on the consoles, they have at least to some extent and API for dealing with the hardware and how to boot and everything. I'm sure most of this is taken care of in the dev-kit, but unless you're running the exact same hardware, or are emulating the hardware, it's just not going to happen.
As I mentioned earlier, the key isn't the code. The key is the data files. Yeah, you won't learn how to unlock anyone, but you'll be able to see if there model is there and possibly more.
And for whatever reason, it looks like my last post didn't go so heres some basic stuff you can find out from the ps2 dvd-rom.
grim@cloak:~$ mount /dvdrom
grim@cloak:~$ cd /dvdrom/
grim@cloak:/dvdrom$ ls
area51 license modules netgui slus_208.81
cnf loadinge.raw movieps2 netr.ovl sndsps2
gamer.ovl mkda.pak movier.ovl ntgui.elf system.cnf
grim@cloak:/dvdrom$ cat system.cnf
BOOT2 = cdrom0:\SLUS_208.81;1
VER = 1.01
VMODE = NTSC
grim@cloak:/dvdrom$ ./slus_208.81
bash: ./slus_208.81: Permission denied
grim@cloak:/dvdrom$ ls -l slus_208.81
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 5072296 2004-09-07 12:52 slus_208.81
grim@cloak:/dvdrom$ sh slus_208.81
slus_208.81: slus_208.81: cannot execute binary file
grim@cloak:/dvdrom$ file slus_208.81
slus_208.81: ELF 32-bit LSB MIPS-III executable, MIPS, version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, not stripped
grim@cloak:/dvdrom$
SYSV is a unix standard, not that I expect any of you to know anything about unix, but reguardlessly ps2 is unix based. Also notice that the boot file is an ELF binary. In the unix and linux world there are a few different formats for executables (read as programs). ELF is the most common one now adays. Also notice that it is for a MIPS processor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIPS_architecture). MIPS is RISC based like the powerpc chips found in game cube, and mac's. RISC is in no way compatible with the intel architect (IA), which just about everyone runs. IA is the standard PC that usually comes bundled with windows, and probably what the majority of you are using.
So whats the point of all this? Unless you know the compiler that was used, and can read MIPS bytecode, you're not hacking it. Even if you disassemble it to assembly, you're still looking at risc based assembly, not IA. Which, don't get me wrong, there are people out there that can read it, but i suspect they're not the people that would waste time reverse engineering a mortal kombat game.
